T430 battery not charging with i7-3632QM

#1 Post by 85101 » Mon May 05, 2014 11:07 am

I installed the i7-3632QM in my T430. It works fine when only on AC power (battery removed) or only on battery. If the battery is installed and a power adapter is plugged in, Windows does not show the battery as charging but the battery LED on the lid is lit. If the computer is started with only the power adapter attached and the battery is inserted later, it will switch immediately to battery power and cannot go back to AC unless rebooted. Does anyone have any ideas about how to fix this?

EDIT: I think I found the problem. The 65W adapter will not charge with a quad core CPU when the computer is running, even though the CPU is 35W. It charges when the computer is asleep. I will try with the 90W adapter when I get home.

Just curious if this was fixed as I am thinking of getting a T430 and going the quad core route.

Right - you need the 90W adapter once you install the i7-3632QM. I ran into the same problem with my T530... even though the 3632QM has the same 35W TDP as the i5-3360M it replaced, the machine will no longer operates normally off the 65W charger. If I remember right, mine will charge off the 65W if it's powered down or sleeping, but, if I try to run with the 65W adapter plugged in it just runs off battery (it basically ignores the adapter). I'm not sure what it does if I remove the battery and use the 65W adapter - I never tried that.

My machine has the NVS 5400M graphics, but everything still worked fine off the 65W adapter prior to the CPU upgrade. This is one thing that made me sad about the upgrade - the 65W adapter is a lot smaller and lighter than the 90W brick. Could be worse, though - the 90W is still way smaller than the ridiculous 135W model.

The 90W adapter will do it. It's been running with no problems for more than a year.

I bought few months ago a T430 with original CPU and did the same, change to new 3612QM, and after, I got the same simptoms like your. My charger is apparentely a 90W charger, serial 42T4428. Is your charger the same model like mine or other? Tell me! I guess my charger is not original.
