r51 hdd not recognized

is there a way to prepare a non ibm ide drive for use in r51 and t42p, thinkpads
it seems that generic ide drives need a firmware update, to allow them to be recognized ?
apparently, not all drives will accept ibm firmware updates, and will not be recognized.

any assistance greatly appreciated

Because not all drives are IBM drives!
And this firmware story is absolute nonsense!
Either your HD is bad, not inserted properly, or the mobo is bad.

And please don't start double postings!

AFAIK the HDD firmware issue he refers to only applies to the T43, R52, and X41/X41T.
Am I correct?
