Swap hdd in T61p to T60?

#1 Post by mbr12 » Fri May 16, 2014 3:36 pm

Can a hdd presently in a T61p with Windows 7 be put into a T60P? I imagine some drivers would have to be changed, but would the os be good to go?
The W7 was not the original os in the T61. It was installed from a disc and is activated and running fine. I don't have the Windows disc that was used.
Thanks

You can install it, but you will need another Windows license (key) to re-activate the OS after getting all the hardware drivers installed. If the OS sees more than a couple key hardware items change, it deactivates.

A month ago, my old T60 died from a hardware failure, and I bought a new (actually older) T60. I took my SSD out of the wreck and installed it in the new. Is running flawlessly, and OS (Win8) is stil showing "activated" even though all the hardware is different apart from the HD.

Some times the HDDs will swap with no issues. I have multiple Z61t's that as a experiment cloned a 7 HDD and swapped between the machines. Often times it work, but more than once it crashed and burned, demanding a new Serial. That said all of the installs were short term, Im not so sure it would not come back to haunt me if I tried running them for more than a week at a time.

We don't know what ms sucked off our machines and what they use as a criteria for a re-activation.

I know that when I put my Same XP based HDD from one T30 to another T30 and ms 2010 office refused to load. Same HDD (same memory, same optical drive, and same wireless card, identical BIOS revision, etc...) All T30s are functionally equivalent at the mb level, so I don't know what pi$$ed off the ms activation gestapo, but I had to call in and re-activate.

I find that Linux installations can be swapped to different machines alot more easier than Windows 7.
I was using my Xubuntu HDD from my X61 to an A31p when I was testing it.
