Easiest/cheapest way to upgrade X201 Tablet to MultiTouch?

#1 Post by stere0123 » Sat May 31, 2014 1:34 pm

I recently bought an X201 Tablet on eBay and it did not mention that it did not come with the MultiTouch screen.
I am curious as to how easy (or cheap) it would be to upgrade the screen from the "12.1" TFT display with 1280x800 (WXGA) resolution, 400 nits with LED backlight (outdoor, just pen input)" that this came with, to the "12.1" TFT display with 1280x800 (WXGA) resolution, 300 nits with LED backlight (2-finger MultiTouch)", as MultiTouch would be a very nice feature. I would assume that the only way to get MultiTouch would be to get a new screen, but if there is some kind of alternative I am unaware of (is replacing the digitizer alone possible?) please let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You can take a look to the hardware maintenance manual to see the steps needed to replace the lcd panel: click me. Check page 103 onward (check the printed page in the document, not the page # from your pdf viewer).

I was of the opinion that you need to change the complete LCD to get multitouch, but I'm not 100% sure

I know how to replace the LCD and would gladly do so to get multitouch, but money is sort've an issue here, and I have not personally been able to find an LCD on eBay for anything less than the price I paid for the entire laptop. Does anyone know if there is some alternate way to add this multitouch feature, or if this is embedded into the LCD circuit board (or similar) and a full LCD swap would be required?
