x220 4gb pc3-10600 + 8gb pc3-12800?

#1 Post by petko8680 » Fri Jun 20, 2014 4:01 pm

Hi all,
just wanted to ask if the x220 will accept and recognize an additional 8gb pc3-12800 ram module, added to the current pc3-10600 module. Cheers

Yes it will,

I have 12gb of ram in mine. A 4gb and an 8 gb. And both are quite happily recognized. Not that I've gone into too much depth with it, but System Info and other apps/functions relay the 12gb total RAM information.

All you can do is try, most likely it will work.
Some modules work better than others (also depends on the manufacturer), some don't work at all in certain machines.
But if you combine 2 different RAM speeds, the laptop will always run at the speed of the slowest RAM.

hi,
have tested and the system did recognize the new 8gb ram module. And yes- they both run at 1333MHz, despite the new one is 1600MHz. Can't notice any change in performance and speed, but guess that's how it is.

Even if you pull the 4GB 1333 MHz one, it will still run at 1333 MHz. Unless of course you have some old BIOS or the X220 escaped the arbitrary cap from Lenovo.

Will leave it for now if everything is fine. Basically the 21gb will only be used when needed, right?

When Windows sees a lot of RAM, it will use a lot of RAM. The part between 8GB and 12GB no Dual channel performance btw.
