Mobo from 15" t60p into a 14" t60 chassis?

#1 Post by fefrie » Tue Jun 24, 2014 12:08 am

I've yet to find out about the t60p that I saw online. 15", does that come with the IPS screen automatically?

I'm still partial to the 14" form factor, and the screen on the 14" is still pretty good.

Since I like the 14" better, I'd prefer to have the more powerful vid card of the p. I'd beleive that it'd be the 5250 card?

Would it be worth it to switch the internals to upgrade the 14" t2200 1.8ghs 2mb L2 cache 64mb x1300ati to the t7400 2.16 4mb L4 cache with the 128mb 5250?

The motherboards between the 15in and 14.1in are directly swappable. However, the 15in T60 will have an additional interposer card to extend the ports to the optical drive, but since the 14.1in T60 does not need this, you can just exclude it.

Only 15in T60s with SXGA+ or UXGA screens are IPS. The 15in XGA screen is NOT IPS.

It's up to you if its worth it or not. The T60's (especially the 4:3 ones) are fine machines and I can understand why people still like to use them up to this day. I have one myself as well as a FrankenPad. That being said, their age does show, the specs you mentioned can become quite hot without 100% efficient cooling (I might open a thread on that in the next couple of days) and the GPU does not support hardware acceleration, so it's up to the CPU to do most of the work. And while the T7400 is one of the fastest CPU's available for the T60, it can struggle when it comes to stuff like full HD videos.

So basically, if you like to tinker with things or really love your T60 then you might as well go ahead. But if you're hoping to breathe new life into this brilliant machine then I'm afraid you will be disappointed. If that's what you're after a FrankenPad might suit your purpose better. If you're *that* partial to the 14" (4:3) form factor, a properly-tested T61/p is your best bet...
