Advice regarding buying a T60

#1 Post by Padraic » Thu Jun 26, 2014 1:48 am

Hi everyone, I have a T43 with Windows XP and I'm hoping to get another Laptop with Windows 7 soon. I really love The classic thinkpads, so I'm after some advice as what to buy.
Is the T60 the last of the classic Thinkpads?
What would the ultimate spec to buy, I am considering buying from a German company who can configure the Laptop to the spec I require.
Will my current T43 docking station, ultrabay slim accessories ( hard drive caddy, battery, DVD Player) and spare power leads work with the T60?
How much will I end up Paying?
I know I can install Windows 7 on the T43, but I am currently training in Mechatronics and some of the systems we use are only compatible with XP
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards Padraic.

Welcome to the Forum!

T60 is indeed the last of the Mohicans (T60, T60p) and/or Transylvanians (T601 Frankies)!
If you want an absolutely drop dead gorgeous top-of-the-line T60 machine, look no further than this T601FL Frankenpad: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=114543

The only parts from a T43 that could be used in a T60 are some RAM-modules (provided they are DDR2-PC5300 and not DDR2-PC4200) and the optical drive.
T43 uses PATA hard drives (unless SATA-modded) and 16V, T60 and newer all use SATA hard drives and 20V power supplies with different connectors.

Hi and thanks for the reply, I wish I could afford that machine, but it out of my league.!!!
I'm using a T43 and I would prefer to keep this machine with XP because I am using it for some PLC programming.
I would like to buy something similar with Windows 7 but I don't want a run of the mill Laptop from the high street stores, I was something decent but not too expensive.
I have bought my T43 and my mums T43 from Lapstore.de and they have some T60's which they will build to the spec that I want, so I may go down this route.

What are you looking to spend on a T60? Are you looking for a 14" or 15" unit?

Hi, a 14" unit, €300-€400 is around what I would like to spend.

Well, that amount of money should buy you just about the world's finest 14" T60/p.

With that sum I'd be looking into a 14" T61/p, but that's me. A lot more future-proof than its older sibling.
