Flexview sRGB coverage
Flexview sRGB coverage
You'll often hear that the flexview screens are excellent for photo editing, etc ... This suggests that along with excellent viewing angles the screen has good sRGB/Adobe coverage. Now we know that currently for laptops, full sRGB is about as good as it gets. Most laptop screens are between 50-70% sRGB.
Do we know what the approximate sRGB coverage is for flexview screens?

Re: Flexview sRGB coverage
From what I recall - for the original FlexViews from A3x/R5x/T4x/T6x era - it was 45% or thereabouts.blank001 wrote:

With that said, good sRGB numbers are quite meaningless on TN panels where the colours shift the moment one moves their neck 2cm from the screen...

Re: Flexview sRGB coverage
Maybe the other thing to remember is at the time those ThinkPads were available, there were few other options available for those looking a good screen on a notebook. I do seem to recall a PVA LCD offered on a Fujitsu DTR, but that was a 10 pound beast with a Pentium 4. Now you've got the DreamColor from HP and others, but you couldn't get anything like back then.

Re: Flexview sRGB coverage
The color space that is covered is just one of many aspects of a display. It can, or can not be good at it. It being a IPS or whatever does not mean anything.
Brightness, Contrast, viewing angles, colors are all pretty much independent from each other.
You can have a IPS with horrid colors. Like the X220 IPS with 60% sRGB. Or you can have a TN panel with great colors, see the W520 FHD. (95% AdobeRGB). That being said, George does have a point, while I absolutely LOVE a high color gamut, I would not trade it for a IPS, because unlimited viewing angles just come in more handy IMO.
Now, I happen to be quite nit-picky when it comes to displays, and I have a good eye (in fact a pair of them) for these sort of things as well. My FrankenPad with SXGA+ FlexView shows colors that resemble that of a monitor with 90% sRGB coverage. I did not actually measure it, but trust me, I can see from 1000 miles away if a monitor covers sRGB or not. To me, the difference is like a black and white display vs. a color display.
I do have to warn you, like George I also remember someone measuring it at something like 50% sRGB. (the SXGA+ FlexView) I can not say for certain what's going on here, but I don't care, because I just need to look at the screen and I'll instantly notice how colors pop out, just like on my other screens that are proven to cover sRGB. (mostly external monitors)
However, I can only recommend the SXGA+ FlexView for photo editing if you have a colorimeter. The colors are a bit off on factory settings, though not as bad as TN's usually are.

Re: Flexview sRGB coverage
Rob Galbraith once reviewed several displays (T60 Flexview among them) from the PoV of their suitability for photo editing.
http://www.robgalbraith.com/multi_page2 ... -9320-9876
On the second page you can see some qualitative shots of color space covered by each LCD versus sRGB. Although there are no accurate numbers, it does look like the T60 one covers quite a bit more than 50% (maybe 70-80%) of the sRGB, which seems consistent with Aurora's speculations.
Also, I assume there may be differences between the SXGA+ and UXGA panels, which are different and were produced by different manufacturers.

Thank you for link. It is interesting article for reading.dr_st wrote:Rob Galbraith once reviewed several displays (T60 Flexview among them) from the PoV of their suitability for photo editing.
But there is another question for this topic
13N7196 and 13N7194. Ghost LCDs from T60. I was hunting for them for some time - but o luck. In main topic for T6x LCDs there was some hints about 13N7194... And thinkwiki gives another hint:
I don't know any info for 13N7196 (SXGA+ sRGB).ThinkWiki wrote: sRGB Mode is a method applied in some BOE-Hydis TFTs to re-map colors from the native (non-calibrated) TFT color space into a color space within a scaled down sRGB color triangle, thus with sides parallel to the sRGB color triangle. This means that the color gamut is not 72% of NTSC like normal sRGB, but it is still in the range of 45-55%. By sRGB mode one gains the benefit of a completely calibrated LCD (in sRGB terms) within the possible color gamut the color filters allow it to display.
PS
Interesting how good X6x tablet IPS screens (XGA and SXGA+) in terms of sRGB coverage?
Re: Flexview sRGB coverage
Not good, 60% at best.FryPpy wrote:
