10 year old IBM battery or new 3rd party ebay battery?

#1 Post by SailingAway » Tue Jul 29, 2014 7:02 am

I'm looking to get a new 8-cell battery for my X40. I have a choice between a new never used original IBM battery manufactured in 2004 or a current year third party battery. Any suggestions?

I would prefer to go with the original IBM but I'm not sure what 10 years of storage will have done to the capacity and overall function of the battery.

Nothing good.

If it's a Panasonic, it might be somewhat OK. Otherwise expect it to lose ~50% of the capacity after a few rundowns.

The new third party battery is probably going to have better battery life, but may not have been built up to the same safety standards.

I recently bought an ebay battery that APPEARED to be a correct factory style 8 cell but the wrong battery came in the mail- the one with two rows of cells outside the case. Does anyone know of any aftermarket batteries with 4 prismatic and 8 cylindrical cells like an OEM battery? I don't mind aftermarket if they're the correct dimensions.

My x40s. Sorry, I forget this is a multi-machine forum.

Well, I have no suggestion for a third-party battery, but you might get lucky enough to grab a NOS example on feebay if you're patient enough...while definitely old, X40 is not ancient quite yet.

Good luck.
