X61 Motherboard in X61T?

#1 Post by mckormick » Sat Aug 02, 2014 11:57 am

Hi all - I have a T9300 x61 that I love apart from the screen res.

I know there are methods to shoehorn a x61T screen in but is it possible the other way around - could I buy a bricked x61T and put my x61 mainboard in it?

Cheers for any advice!

Bad thing is - tablets like X6xs have thin bodyes. And use thin HSF (cooling system). Because of that tablets use LV / ULV processors. Your T9300 is SV processor and i think it will boil with tablet HSF.
Other bad thing - tablet use extra pins in lcd connector on mainboard for wacom and tablet buttons (and some indicators) functioning. Non tablet mainboard have this pins disconnected.

IIRC X61s and X61t use physically the same motherboard, just with a different BIOS. Using a X61s board for a x61t will bring no advantage though, as they use the same processors.
However, using the pinmod on a L7700 X61t board, your system will be as fast or possibly faster as the T9300.
Also, someone in the german thinkpad-forum managed to mod a X61 fan/cooler into a x61t.

If you want a better display while keeping the T9300, read about the IPS LCD mod for the X61.
Daily driver: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M

In reserve: X61 T7500, X60 T2300
In pieces: X60s CS U1300 [board only], two retired but working X61Ts

If I remember correctly, the non-tablet motherboard is the normal 'KSnote 3' planar. The tablet motherboard is the 'Dali2' variant. They're the same except for a few component substitutions. For example, the lid switch is not connected on the Dali2 planar, as the signal is handled by the 'microprocessor' board that the tablet has in its lid and the regular/s does not.

If you do a search on 'X61 motherboard schematic' and select 'Chinese' as your target language, you should find a schematic set on Baidu that lists the differences. Unfortunately, I can't link it, the links don't seem to 'travel'.

The planar dimensions are the same, and you can stick the smaller s/t HS/fan on the normal-voltage processor, but don't. The smaller heatsink isn't even 100% sufficient for the LV processor, the normal voltage processor may not even be stable locked to SLFM. I'd worry about panic shutdowns under the slightest sustained load.

That's great - thanks all for the useful replies.

I think I will look at the IPS LCD mod instead as suggested.
