expansion slot?

#1 Post by VanZan » Wed Aug 06, 2014 3:30 pm

I have an x61 (not the tablet one). Over on the left above the memory card slot is that a PCMCIA expansion card slot?

If so would I be able to add bluetooth (although a usb dongle would probably be better/cheaper) or preferably usb 3 with it?

Thanks!

Yes, it is a PCMCIA / Cardbus slot. There are PCMCIA Bluetooth cards, but not USB 3.0. USB 3.0 is much faster than what a PCMCIA / Cardbus can support. And yes, a USB Bluetooth dongle is cheaper.
You can get USB 3 into a mini PCIe slot, but they're mostly mPCIe Gen 2 and I'm not sure if they're backwards compatible. If they are,you may get some improvement (because 1x mini PCIe is faster than USB 2.0) but not the full USB 3.0 speeds.
Someone keep me honest with the USB 3 thing, please!
Cheers,

R
