VMware dualboot XP/98

#1 Post by jwhpa » Sun May 22, 2005 9:57 am

I've seen some references for using VMware to set-up dual OS systems. Currently, I'm using XP on a T40. I need to have 98 for 3 non-XP applications. Can I create a virtual machine with VMware on the original XP system, and then load it with 98 without affecting the existing system? Or must I install 98 first and then reinstall XP? Basically, I'm trying to ask if I can keep my XP system as it is and use VMware to make a virtual 98 machine without jepordizing or redoing my original system.
Thanks,
JH

As the poster before mentioned, Yes. In addition, you can load other virtual machines (other Windows, or Linux machines) without in any way affecting your host machine. You can copy a VM to do testing (or use Snapshots). Very good, very flexible. ... JD Hurst

What is really cool about a virtual machine in VMware is that a hard drive is virtualized & encapsulated in a host file. Even better is the fact that if you create a 4GB virtual disk, it does not take up 4GB on the host system. the file grows as you store more stuff in teh virtual disk. You can easily create a Win98 VM in about 500MB.

I don't recommend people using the raw disk mode to dual boot the same OS. It can be done, but it can go wrong.
Using virtual disk is more flexible.
