No Audio on a T410
No Audio on a T410
Hi Guys,
So this morning I turn on my T410 (Win 7 64 Bit) and I see in the system tray the Speaker Icon with a small "X" in a red circle.
When I hover the mouse arrow over it, a pop message states "No Audio Output Device is installed". When I click on it, Microsoft Diagnostics Troubleshooting Wizard runs and I get the message at the end "Audio Device is disabled."
So I went to the device manager, clicked on Sound, video and game controllers. I see the following listed:
Conexant 20585 SmartAudio HD
NVIDIA High Definition Audio
NVIDIA High Definition Audio
NVIDIA High Definition Audio
Unknown device
Now, I uninstalled the Conexant item and went to Lenovo's Support site and downloaded the driver and installed it. I did this several times. It did not fix it. I uninstalled all five items (the Conexant and NVIDIA drivers) and re-installed them and no dice.
I just ran Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox and the HD Audio Controller - High Definition Audio Controller passed the test.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what is going on here? The speakers and the earphone jack (I had a pair of ear buds listening to a MP3) were working yesterday. When I play a MP3 I get a error message and when I play a DVD, it does not play and gives me the message "Failed to open audio device" (this was with WinDVD software).
Any thoughts on what might be going on here?
Thank you,
John

Re: No Audio on a T410
Did you ruin a USB-port?
Check them all carefully, they can short/crack easily.

Hi RBS,
It's funny that you mention the USB ports. I just checked them and no cracks nor shorts that I can see. But the three ports on the left side do not work. I plug in a thumb drive and nada but if I plug the drive in the yellow USB 2.0 port on the right side it works. Now I have a hardware error (from the ThinkVantage System checker) in the System Board with the Real Time Clock (RTC). Also, I get a pop up message (sometimes not all the time - from the system tray) that tells me "USB Device Not Recognized", when I don't have any devices attached via USB.
Any thoughts?
Thank you,
John

Re: No Audio on a T410
To immediately rule out driver issues perhaps booting a live Linux Mint or Ubuntu disc (or USB) would help. If the audio does not work on linux then you might have a hardware issue. If you go this route then save the bootable Linux image! I keep a couple of Linux ISOs around and find them extremely helpful in troubleshooting. Good luck

Re: No Audio on a T410
I am currently running the Unbutu Live CD and I have played back a YouTube video, placed a short movie clip that was on the Live CD and an audio file (song) and all of them I get sound from the built in speakers and the ear phone jack with my earbuds.
Now to figure out why Win 7 is giving me issues with the sound not working.
Thanks again Emeraldgirl!
John
P.s. It kind of wants me to make the switch to Linux.

Re: No Audio on a T410
The issue is fixed. Google is your friend...I searched "audio device is disabled" and the first link I got, I went to.
Here is the link from a MS support forum:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... 166a0233b0
Under the first response from a MS Engineer, I found a post labeled Most Helpful Reply, here is what it says:
go to start search and type cmd search will return cmd.exe right click on this and select 'run as administrator' at the prompt type:-
net localgroup Administrators /add networkservice
press enter then type:
net localgroup Administrators /add localservice
press enter then type:
exit
press enter and restart your computer
I did this exactly as it states and bingo, I have audio! I don't know what these commands do and if you know let me know since I am curious about them.
Thank you again RBS & EG for your help this morning.
