Thinkpad 310 HDD caddy?

#1 Post by digitaldrifter » Mon Aug 25, 2014 8:14 pm

Hi everybody. First time on here. I am a Thinkpad Fanatic and I thought it's time to join the forum.

I've been wanting to get into older Thinkpad models, so I ordered a couple off of e-bay. The one that just came in the mail was a 310ED, and I'd like to try the 400mhz K6-2 mod to it. It was advertised as DOA, and sure enough, when I plugged it in I got the power light, but nothing else. A re-seat of the CPU fixed the issue. My main problem right now (besides the dead CMOS battery) is that it didn't come with a hard drive, and I am having a heck of a time finding a source of these online. There are a couple of retailers that say they have it, but I thought I'd ask on here to see if anyone has one lying around.

The second one I have coming is a 390E. The seller says it works, but has a dead hard drive. I'd like to try to upgrade the CPU on this one as well. My plan is to get a small Linux distro going to brush up my skills.

I should probably put this in a sig, but my current Thinkpads are:
X301 (mine)
T400 (wife's, bought DOA, did the 'remove CMOS battery and wait a bit' trick and it came to life)
W500 (will probably give to my son, pristine condition)
T500 (broken screen, using a docking station, set up as a SAMBA file server)
T41 (parts laptop, vertical lines in screen, either HDD or system board failing)

As you can see, I'm a fanatic. I had a T61p for several years, but I'm really liking the light weight of the X301, even if it is getting a bit long in the tooth.

Enough rambling!

Welcome to FTP.

Concerning your comments about the W500 you should read compulsory rule #5. http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=14339

hello and welcome to the forum..

both of those, i think, use a PATA hard drive and probably one under 6 gig and maybe even under 2 gig..
for the caddy check the one and only advertiser here, above.. NEWMODE US should have the caddys..
since i have not looked for PATA HDD's in years i'm not up on their availability..
i have a bunch of 701C drives and caddys (and the 701C's they go with) and some larger PATA drives hanging around..
might even have a caddy for your 310 and 390 but i saw very few of those and i don't remember what caddy they used.. whether it was the same as the 750/755 series or not..

Thanks Bill. I checked them out, but since it looked like they were overseas, that concerned me. Glad to hear they're legit.

Cigarguy, thanks for the tip, I missed reading that part.
