Re: Old Computer Ads
I thought these were Ericsson brand stuff, but apparently not. The "Lap Power" logo reminded me about the Ericsson "Hotline" logo back in the 90s. Cool to see.
I have fond memories of old swedish electronics, in shape of these old Ericsson phones for the NMT450 and MNT900 system. Unfortunately we threw them away when we were done with them, I would have loved to have my first old Ericsson brick today. The first one I kept and still have is a 688 GSM.

Incidentally, i have an operational Hotline device. The battery is shot, but some creative wiring and a separate battery and it powers right back up.Norway Pad wrote:I thought these were Ericsson brand stuff, but apparently not. I can still dial and call in close proximity to nmt towers. But since the NMT network has been shut down nationally, the phone is pretty useless exept for in certain areas. I've got full reception at the Royal institute of Technology for instance.

Re: Old Computer Ads
That's cool. What model is it? I don't remember which NMT I had, only my first GSM, which was a GH388.
I also thought that the MNT networks got turned off in the early 2000s, the 900 first and then the 450 some years later. So you can even make call from this phone still? Now we talk both retro computing and retro phoning.

Its a 450 I think.Norway Pad wrote:That's cool. What model is it? I don't remember which NMT I had, only my first GSM, which was a GH388.

And yes, if you have two NMT devices within the radius of an active NMT tower, you can make calls to each other, and only each other. Assuming the numbers are still active that is. Which is pretty common considering most people never bothered to cancel them when the network was shut down.
That said, I know of only three active NMT towers in Sweden that uses that specific frequency that you can use to call from. One is located on the roof of the Commuter lab at the Stockholm Royal Institute of technology. The second is at is at Livgardet, the largest military base in the Stockholm area. And the third is independently operated in northern Sweden just on the Norway/Sweden border in the mountains.
PS: Also, the fist GSM was the NH172.
PS2: I'm not an Ericsson nerd, just that my gielfriends

Re: Old Computer Ads
Wow, so in terms of those hard drive prices the x220 I am using at the moment has $28,000,000 of hard drive space in it.
On the other hand, I agree that is one hell of a sexy modem although although unfortunately the 4.8kbps is a bit of a deal breaker vs fibre broadband.
