Howdy gents. The legend continues for the 310ED.
I tore her down today to replace the dead CMOS battery. It was kind of a pain, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Now I can fully configure the BIOS and save my settings!
The problem is that I don't have a HDD or a floppy, and only have the CD-ROM. I have the CD set to be bootable in the BIOS, but every time I turn it on, it says "Insert system diskette and press <Enter> to reboot". I have all drives disabled in the BIOS, and have tried it with all drives enabled, yet it still won't let me continue. I'm thinking that there is some funky IBM software thing I need to do to get the CD to boot, and that requires a hard drive. Can anyone confirm otherwise?
I have a caddy on order from Newmode, and I'll be getting a HDD for it as well. I've also been messing around with CPU's, as that was the main reason I bought this particular model. I tore the key pin off of a K6-2 450 I had lying around and threw her in there, and it runs @ 66mhz x6 (400mhz) and at 2.35v. Unfortunately, as has been discovered by toddyjoe, it runs way too hot. I also have a K6-2+ 550 in my Super 7 machine, but the performance between the K6-2 and the K6-2+ is night and day; ~34FPS in Quake 2 vs ~46FPS, so I'd like to keep the K6-2+ where it is.
I'll probably pick up a K6-III or another K6-2+ off of ebay, since the prices have been going down. She should fly then. I also have 128mb coming in the mail, so once I have everything here, I'll put some sort of Puppy Linux on her and see what she does. I'll keep you guys posted.

Re: Booting from CD 310ED
Learning curve: Apparently, you need a hard drive that has a bootable partition before the 310ED will let you boot from CD. I learned this by accident; I left a bootable rescue CD in the drive while rebooting after formatting the hard drive, and it booted to the CD. FYI for all of you 310 owners.
