X61T bios update for resource conflict

#1 Post by Billaboard » Mon Sep 08, 2014 2:03 pm

I have an X61T that gives 2 bleeps during boot and reports a resource conflict on pci Bus 5.

I have tried all the obvious things such as disabling ports, usb etc. in the bios, and also booting with the wifi card unplugged, but there is no change.
If I hit Esc after the beeps, it boots happily into Linux Mint 17, and everything I have tested so far seems to work except the usb sockets. This means that I can't use my external DVD drive.
I have got the docking station and the optical drive in that does work (but not the usb), so with that and the network access, I can pull the bios update onto the machine.

I am not sure what I would have to do after that. The bios notes say to remove the machine from the docking station when flashing the bios.

Has anyone here done anything like this? Is it likely that flashing the bios might remove the conflict, or am I wasting my time? I realise this might be a hardware fault.

Check under the palmrest if you have anything in your right-most card slot (next to wifi).
Could be a faulty turbo-memory card.

No, there is nothing in the WWAN slot. I've tried without the modem (I think it is - the middle thing under the palmrest) and without the WAN pci card. I haven't tried removing the HD adapter, but the HD seems to work fine.

I have reset the bios, but that didn't help. I also removed the small yellow battery for a while, when all the cards were out.

Oddly, I now have just one pci bus conflict message now. The others disappeared as I disabled things in the bios, and haven't returned as the components have been re-installed.

Once i had the same problem with T20. I think it happend after i changed mPCI modem with 3Com networl/modem card. I have changed PCI IRQ settings (BIOS -> Config ->PCI). I have some tryes to get working configuration. If something goes wrong after reconfiguring IRQs -> reconnect yellow battery and go on.

Did you do some work with displa assemby in near past? May be some cables (to finger print reader shorten and USB ports become dead)? Check lspci (need root priveleges) output in linux - see what happening with USB and USB2 controllers?

PS
Other way - use PCMCIA ->USB adapter, but you loost USB boot ability.

Thanks.

I haven't yet tried changing the PCI IRQ settings. They are all at IRQ11, which seems to be normal for these machines. I was thinking of trying disabling, say, the parallel port and changing them all to its value. I don't really understand why the norm is for them all to be set to 11.

I haven't done anything with the display assembly (it's a 1400 x 1050), but I suppose the cables could have been pulled during enthusiastic hinge operation. I don't really want to dismantle the screen if I can help it.

The lspci -vv command gives output like the following

Does your wacom digitizer work? The SD cardreader?

Also try to boot while the internal screen is disconnected from the mainboard. All kinds of crazy things can happen when parts of the LCD cable break.

The Wacom digitiser works fine. An SD card doesn't. I haven't tried the firewire port as it means digging out an audio device that works with Linux.

I have tried with an external screen connected and selected via F7, but I haven't tried actually removing the feed to the local display.

Have you taken out and reseated your RAM?

And a BIOS update works fine with the optical drive in the X6x ultrabase. Dont forget to initialize with F9.

Yes, I have reseated the ram several times, tried it in the other slot (it says restart with the ram in slot 0), and tried another RAM module.

I will try the BIOS update from the ultrabase. Thanks.

Edit: Now tried that. I used the image file from a CD in the Ultrabase. If you follow the route through the instructions, it stops you and says to disconnect the base. If you jump in to the second option, it works fine and updates the bios.

Unfortunately, this makes no difference. I now suspect that the Ricoh chip has failed, so I'll have to keep dismantling until I can find it and have a look.

Its a lovely little machine, so it's a shame.

Have you tried disabling every device possible from within the BIOS?

Yes, thanks for this because, although I'd updated and reset the bios, I hadn't tried manually disabling everything in the new bios.

Unfortunately, it makes no difference.

OP have you tried this suggestion by RBS yet? IIRC turbo memory cards seemed to be more trouble than they are worth. Just asking because I see no explicit confirmation that you have tried this in your responses so far.

Yes, there is nothing in the WWAN slot, where the turbo memory card should go, if I've understood everything correctly.
