USB Mouse Conflicts w/ USB Keyboard in DOS
USB Mouse Conflicts w/ USB Keyboard in DOS
Can anyone help me figure out how to use a USB mouse WITH a USB keyboard in DOS?
The mouse will not work until keyboard is disconnected. But keyboard will work when mouse is connected.
EDIT (I apologize for leaving out a critical detail)
I can move the mouse pointer without a problem but I can't click anything at all (no response).
That's what makes it so strange. It appears the mouse is working, but you can't click anything.
Not a 'dos box' but actual dos 7 and\or win98 command prompt as well as dos apps\programs.
Haven't tried dos 6.x but I suspect it would be the same problem.
Tried various mice but only have tried a couple of logitech K740's to test.* Same results all around.
* only usb keyboard we have on hand. Also tried powered usb hubs but same problem.
It's the same while using the Adv Dock or directly via the T61. Also noted this on two different T61s
(15.6" wide screen & 14.1" standard 4:3). Am I missing a bios setting for this? Using Middleton.
Also haven't tried a wireless keyboard with the usb mouse. Inconvenient workaround if it works at all.
EDIT: This works... but again, it's very inconvenient as we are going to DOS a lot for dos apps etc.
Also, it's the same problem for any boot manager we've tried.
Any help would be a blessing. Thank you!

Ever heard of USB drivers?
You need them for those oldie OSes.

Actually, that can't be the case.RealBlackStuff wrote:Ever heard of USB drivers?

We use usb mouse & keyboard in other systems in dos for many years. It's called LEGACY support.
And doesn't the fact that either one will work (just not at the same time in these laptops) make it something other than drivers?

Re: USB Mouse Conflicts w/ USB Keyboard in DOS
AFAIK the USB Legacy support in the BIOS makes the computer think they are PS/2 devices...
There are also USBxxx.INF files in c:\windows\inf that may need to be reinstalled.
This help? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310923
Or try and use a PS/2 mouse and a USB KB (or v.v.) via dock

No, because we are not talking about 'Dos Mode'. We are needing full DOS support.RealBlackStuff wrote:AFAIK the USB Legacy support in the BIOS makes the computer think they are PS/2 devices...

WHOA!!!!!!!!!! I forgot the dock has that port.RealBlackStuff wrote: Or try and use a PS/2 mouse and a USB KB (or v.v.) via dock
But I had always thought it was only emulating it since there wasn't a native port on the laptop.
Because of that, I told myself that it probably won't work. But I never even tried it.
Thanks for the push...

Re: USB Mouse Conflicts w/ USB Keyboard in DOS - Dock PS2 a
Most Esteemed RBS:
Using a PS-2 mouse on that port is a BUST. Same exact problem.
We can move the pointer around but no response when clicking on anything.
Then when keyboard is unplugged the mouse works perfectly.*
* I refer to hot unplugging (on the fly) and hot plugging, NOT having to reboot.
Rebooting makes no difference. No matter what, we can't utilize the mouse click
when the usb keyboard is plugged in. Now with that special cable that handles BOTH
PS-2 keyboard and PS-2 mouse, it MAY work, but we don't know anyone who has this,
nor where to get one. I only have the 'Y' adapter which only allows the use of 2 mice.
It will not allow a keyboard and a mouse.
Your suggestion of inf files is not relevant because we are speaking of pure DOS
and related dos apps & programs.
I've just re-confirmed both work correctly in all our desktops systems.
Perhaps I can mess around with the resources in bios.
At this point I'm willing to try Voodoo.

Re: USB Mouse Conflicts w/ USB Keyboard in DOS - Trackpad Al
Did I mention that you can't even click on anything using the Trackpad with USB Keyboard attached?!
Nothing works there either, no buttons and no double tap on the pad. Same problem.
It appears the only solution is to disconnect external keyboard and use internal keyboard.
Not ideal to say the least, since the display gets in the way of external monitor.

Re: USB Mouse Conflicts w/ USB Keyboard in DOS
Find out if you can set on of INTA through INTH in BIOS under Config/PCI.
You need to find out WHICH Int does what.
Happy hunting!

Re: USB Mouse Conflicts w/ USB Keyboard in DOS
So, I'm trying to sort through all the data. Let me know if I got something wrong:
* Logitech K740 + mouse - works fine in DOS on desktop systems
* Logitech K740 + mouse - does not work in DOS on T61 Thinkpads (cannot click mouse / trackpoint / touchpad buttons)
* Some other wireless keyboard + mouse - works fine on T61 Thinkpads
My gut feeling is that it's the keyboard's fault. It may be some strange compatibility issue with K740 keyboard and Thinkpads (or specifically T61). Or it may be that the keyboard is somehow not compliant to some particular standard having to do with Legacy USB support.
Legacy USB support indeed works by emulating PS/2 to the OS. This is why you don't need any DOS USB drivers to get the keyboard + mouse working (you do need a standard DOS PS/2 mouse driver). On a laptop, the internal keyboard + trackpoint / touchpad already emulate PS/2, so there may be some conflicts which will not happen on a desktop.
Just to be sure - are you using the same mouse driver in all your DOS environments? You can also see if a different mouse driver will play nice with your keyboard setup.
I don't have the exact same setup you have, but I have a docked T60 with USB keyboard (Lenovo Enhanced Performance) and USB mouse (Logitech MX310) attached, and I just verified that they work well together in DOS mode. I used Hiren's boot CD installed to a USB flash drive to boot a pure DOS (actually Win98 SE) environment, and both keyboard and mouse work well at the same time.
You can try Hiren's BootCD as well, to verify if the issue can be solved by using their mouse driver.

YES, all that is correct.dr_st wrote:So, I'm trying to sort through all the data. Let me know if I got something wrong:

Totally makes sense. Could explain the entire situation. That keyboard is pretty fancy. Unfortunately, I don't have any other usb keyboard to test.dr_st wrote:My gut feeling is that it's the keyboard's fault. What if I were to use a PS2 keyboard with the usb mouse? I'll try that. If I can connect ps2 KB to the dock?
Because as mentioned, the ps2 mouse connected to dock had the very same problem.
Actually, even before DOS, it has to go through the Boot Managers (System Commander & Bare Metal) and it's the same problem with both of those.dr_st wrote: Just to be sure - are you using the same mouse driver in all your DOS environments? That keyboard interests me. I've heard about it before but never looked at one.dr_st wrote:I don't have the exact same setup you have, but I have a docked T60 with USB keyboard (Lenovo Enhanced Performance) and USB mouse (Logitech MX310) attached, and I just verified that they work well together in DOS mode. Where can we get one to test with?
I'm very familiar with Hirens and incorporate that into my own live boot disks. But I've never checked those systems with anything.
I apologize for not having thought of that myself. Thank you very much for the idea.

I can't see why you wouldn't be able to use a PS/2 keyboard with the dock, but don't have one here to test...EAkamai wrote:If I can connect ps2 KB to the dock?
Hm. Then it is unlikely to be a driver issue, although it doesn't hurt to try Hiren's since you already have them available. It's still more likely the keyboard.EAkamai wrote:Actually, even before DOS, it has to go through the Boot Managers (System Commander & Bare Metal) and it's the same problem with both of those.
I don't know where it's possible to get the Lenovo Enhanced Performance USB keyboard for testing. I just bought a couple a few years back.

Re: USB Mouse Conflicts w/ USB Keyboard in DOS
Folks,
Why aren't we discussing version of mouse.com?
I have been successfully using every combination of USB wired and USB wireless keyboards and mice in DOS for many years.
In my experience ...
Keyboard does NOT require a DOS driver.
Mouse DOES require a DOS driver.
Like original poster, I copy DOS Oper. System files from Windows 98 SE onto desired DOS bootable media.
Before 2003, I used mouse.com from Windows 98 SE. For some reason that I don't remember, I switched to mouse.com from Norton Partition Magic.
These mouse.com DOS drivers worked fine for me for many years (e.g. T30, T61, Dell D620, etc) until I encountered machines like Dell E6410, E6420, E6510, E6520 etc.
In order to make any mouse and/or glide-pad work under DOS for Intel iCore machines, I am now using mouse.com from Acronis True-Image 2013.
Hope this helps.
I am using several varieties of Dell wireless keyboard and mice. Also, I am using wireless Logitech K400r.

If I choose to use DOS bootable CD disc (instead of DOS bootable flash-drive), then there is an additional step to convert config.sys and autoexec.bat into a start-up file and place on CD. Also, I like to create a RAM drive.
I take a different approach at this point.Step 1
Connect USB Pen Drive (1GB or more)
Step 2
Download and Run USB Disk Storage Format

Re: USB Mouse Conflicts w/ USB Keyboard in DOS - Hirens a BU
Whoa, every Hirens disk I have is locking up at the mouse driver when going to dos.
It displays the cdrom driver options list with Auto selected but it locks up right there.
Switched controller to "Compatible" in bios - but had the same problem.
I never knew Hirens locked up like that because I've never used those disks in this t61.
I've always used my own created live disks.
Other findings:
Using a ps2 keyboard with the logitech usb mouse works. As long as that k740 is unplugged.
But that isn't an ideal solution since I'm hooked on that keybrd because we can use it in low light.
Mouse driver used is mouse.com dated 4/20/1998 (probably from Win98).
I've looked around for another mouse driver with no luck. Seems we've misplaced the logitech driver disks.
Very much appreciate the information Robert!
I'm going to scour that H disk for another mouse driver to try.
EDIT: It's been so long since I've used Hirens I forgot about the Alternate start up method.
Still the same problem using Hirens disks. I've also tried older IBM & newer logitech drivers.
It's just GOT to be this keyboard. Nothing works when it's connected.
I'm going to get another one to test that theory.

Back to your keyboard concerns ...EAkamai wrote: Using a ps2 keyboard with the logitech usb mouse works. As long as that k740 is unplugged.
But that isn't an ideal solution since I'm hooked on that keybrd because we can use it in low light.
Mouse driver used is mouse.com dated 4/20/1998 (probably from Win98).
It ought to work without any DOS or Windows driver. Enter BIOS setup using your T61's [F1] key. Now, attempt to navigate around BIOS setup menus using your USB keyboard.
Back to DOS mouse.com concerns ...
Yes, mouse.com dated 4/20/1998 reminds me of my old DOS mouse driver found in Windows 98 SE.
I don't remember why I switched from mouse.com found in Windows 98 SE to mouse.com found in Norton Ghost and Partition Magic 2003.
I do know that I've been successfully using Norton mouse.com with many different brands of USB mice -- until I encountered my first Dell Intel iCore based laptop.
I do know that Win 98 SE mouse.com and Norton mouse.com will immediately freeze/lock-up a Dell Intel iCore based laptop. I resolved this by copying mouse.com from Acronis True Image 2013.

Hello Again!dr_st wrote:I don't have the exact same setup you have, but I have a docked T60 with USB keyboard (Lenovo Enhanced Performance) and USB mouse (Logitech MX310) attached, and I just verified that they work well together in DOS mode.
I just realized that your setup is with a WIRELESS mouse. Have you tested that keyboard with a WIRED mouse like ours?
Believe it or not, we don't have a single wireless mouse to test with.
I bet it would work with a wireless mouse, but not a wired one (whether it's USB or PS2 on the dock).
The problem seems to exist when both keyboard & mouse are wired.
Can anyone confirm before I spend more money for another mouse?
Thanks

No, it isn't. MX310 is wired. It's the M310 that is wireless.EAkamai wrote:I just realized that your setup is with a WIRELESS mouse.
Not sure it would make a difference.EAkamai wrote:I bet it would work with a wireless mouse, but not a wired one (whether it's USB or PS2 on the dock).

Thank you for clearing that up!dr_st wrote:No, it isn't. MX310 is wired. It's the M310 that is wireless.
I really think you're on track suspecting the keyboard. We've tried various mice (all wired)
using ps-2 port on dock and usb ports on both dock and direct to laptop. Nothing allows us to click.
No problem with cursor but no click option.
-----------------------------------
Could you tell me a little about that mouse relevant to the T61?
Did you install drivers for it? Did those drivers conflict with the trackpad in any way or did they need to be sorted out?
I especially want to know about the drivers because of a little discussed feature they can give you.
I haven't been able to duplicate this without drivers and it is difficult to describe. All our desktop systems has it using wired logitech mice.
I'll try to describe it:
When you have more than one window open, you can activate other windows simply by a slight scroll on the scroll button.
In other words, instead of having to actually click on another window, you can hover over it and scroll up or down and it automatically activates that window.
Hopefully that makes sense. I wish I knew the technical name for this worthwhile timesaver and how to achieve it on this laptop.
Thanks again dr for all your help and valuable input!

Re: USB Mouse Conflicts w/ USB Keyboard in DOS
Well, first if all, I don't have a T61, but a T60 as I said. I am also using this mouse on a couple of desktops.
I never installed any mouse drivers other than the generic driver that's built-in into Windows, and never had any conflicts.
As far as I can see, the feature you described (focus on scroll) is not working for me. It probably needs to be set using the specific mouse driver/software.

I'll let you know what this keyboard brings to the table (if anything at all). Should be here early Nov.

Whoa, I somehow missed these drivers. So never installed anything for the UltraNav in W7.robert213 wrote:2) I downloaded from Lenovo and installed ...

However, I use mostly the XP system where I did find & install UltraNav drivers. Works great but still no "focus on scroll".
I would really like to find those ultranav drivers that work in W7. Not sure how I missed that.
Do you have a link for those?
Thanks Robert!

Thank you for the link Bill!
Received the Lenovo Keyboard which proved to us the problem was the Logitech K740.
Once we swapped keyboards, we could use the mouse perfectly in our boot mgrs & DOS.
Simple solution for a strange\bizarre problem.
Thanks & appreciation to all who contributed.

Can you let us know if there is an FTP site or other where we can download older versions of these drivers?
I seem to recall there was such a place, but alas, I can't remember where I put the link(s).
Thanks and much appreciated!

Is there a specific driver version you need? I may be able to find it if I know what to look for.

Thanks Bill! Please disregard for this driver, as we just noted this version's fix for a W7 issue.BillP wrote:Is there a specific driver version you need? I may be able to find it if I know what to look for.
We prefer to first examine the 'Summary of Changes' to see if the release is only adding a new OS like 8.x etc., which we don't need or want.
Experience has taught me to get only the update\release that we need.
If the release\update doesn't address our older OS or have any important changes\fixes we are only dealing with unnecessary bloat.
Are there no more repositories to get older versions of drivers? I could swear we had links before.
Thanks again kind Sir!
EDIT: Just found those links! We add the package or release ID (i.e. '6hgx81ww') to URL for correct link.

Wondering your thoughts about trying a Logitech K800 wireless illuminated keyboard?
We have confirmed mouse works perfectly using the lenovo enhanced keyboard but we need the help for low light conditions.
I'm also testing an M325 mouse but that won't click in dos either. At least not while that K740 is plugged in.
I wonder what's causing it. If it's the illumination somehow drawing too much power the K800 may not work either.
Same problem no matter which usb port we use. But I guess it doesn't hurt to try it out.

Re: USB Mouse Conflicts w/ USB Keyboard in DOS
FYI, replaced the k740 with the k800 and now we can click mouse in dos.
So ended up using wireless m325 rodent with this wireless keyboard and all is well.
I honestly didn't believe it would work that way.
The only problem now is deciding what to do with the Lenovo enhanced keyboard.
Thanks again for all responses and help!
