2nd Hard Drive Adapter Doesn't Fit.

#1 Post by mr_anime » Tue May 24, 2005 11:01 am

Hello One And All,

Recently, I bought an 80GB hard drive off of eBay to replace my old 40GB one. Knowing that I was planning on ghosting my old hard drive to the new one, I also bought a 2nd Hard Drive Adapter For Ultrabay Slim.

Both have already arrived in the mail, and when I removed the CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive to insert the Hard Drive Adapter, I found that I had to force the thing into the bay. I did finally get it in, but it is very difficult to insert and remove the adapter. I can get the adapter in, and it does work, and Windows Recognizes the new drive.

There isn't anything obstructing the bay, and there is nothing on the adapter that should be doing it either. My CD-RW/DVD-ROM slides in and out with ease.

Yes, I do have an UltraBay Slim, yes, it is an adapter for the UltraBay Slim. The 80GB hard drive that I ordered off eBay is the typical 9.5mm, and had no problems fitting into the hard drive slot. I did order the adapter directly from IBM, so if needbe, I could have them replace it.

Here's what I have:

IBM T42 Thinkpad, Model 2373-K1U (link)

2nd Hard Drive Adapter for UltraBay Slim, Part 62P4554 (link)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I had the exact same problem. I had to back off the screws one or two turns on the bottom of the unit. This gave me a fraction of a millimeter extra clearance on the ultrabay slim opening, just enough to get the drive housing in and out.

It didn't seem to have any impact the structural integrity of my T42p. It stills feels solid as a rock.

same here. The adapter is very tight. I am always worried I am going to snap the wee pull out lever.

And it was the same device, for the Ultrabay Slim?

Which model were you using it on?

Could I have the part numbers of your T42 machine and your 2nd Hard Drive Adapter you're using?

Thanks You.

I bought a hard drive adapter for my T42 3mu and it worked just fine. I then had to return that machine and it was replaced with another of the same model. I kept the original hard drive adapter. When I tried to use it in the new 3mu machine, it would hardly fit. I tired backing off the screws on the bottom and it helped a small amount, but it is still a rough fit. Since there were both the same model using the same adapter, it must be something to do with manufacuring of a particular run of machines?

The adapter works fine in spouses T41p, no problems.

That is really weird, then. I thought the basic structure of the T42 is the same, no matter what type it is. I guess maybe something to do with the screws (some how one tighter than the other?). If you call Lenovo enigeer, I am sure they can give your a good explanation.

I tried mine, and found that there is only one screw which will affect the tightness of the ultrabay slim. That is the screw left to the Windows Sticker. Try to loose that screw (no. 4) and you can pull out the hard drive adapter very easily. However, I would say that's a design problem. I have a T42p before, and the adapter fits just perfect.

Good news is that the DVD-Rom, ultrabay battery and the weight saver all fit perfectly. So for those who use these three items, you don't have to worry about that.

If this is the case, should let Lenovo know and improve the design...

Have had a problem in the past where the 2nd HDD adapter didn't work in my T30....it had worked in the past....didn't know what was wrong until I discovered that I had bent a pin on my HDD and that particular pin slipped past one of the holes it was suppose to go in on the adapter. Check everything physically, thoroughly. Bent the pin back and it reinserted in into the adapter and it worked perfectly.

Good luck.
