Cracking WEP Articles.

#1 Post by Plinkerton » Tue May 24, 2005 8:57 pm

Have you guys seen these yet?

PART 1
http://www.tomsnetworking.com/Sections-article118.php
PART 2
http://www.tomsnetworking.com/Sections-article120.php

Interesting stuff, I think.

Anyhow, I'm trying to do everything in the article, to crack into my own (yes my own!) Wifi network.

I'm using Auditor and all that, but the only difference is that I'm using an Orinoco Gold card instead of what they mention. When I comman "iwconfig" it shows up as "ETH0" instead of "WLAN0" as in the article, and this seems to be causing some problems.

I'm not sure if talking about this stuff is not allowed, but I just thought I'd ask anyway.

Can anyone shed some light on what may be going wrong? I'm only using one laptop also.

Thanks,
Plink

Alright. I guess the problem I'm having is that I can't configure the card to "MONITOR" mode thru a command prompt in Linux. It just says that it can't do it. I realize it's not a Prism II card, but I was hoping I could figure this out anyway.

Anyone know how to manually configure the card to monitor mode?

Thanks again,
Plink

Come on! I know there some crazy Linux users here. I have no idea what to do as far as using a prompt. Typing in stuff like that is completely new to me.

It seems that if I have a Prism II card, all these headaches would be gone... I don't want to buy one...

What card and driver are you using in Linux right now?

Hmm.. I may have to get back to you on that. The card is an Orinoco Gold Classic. I'm not sure as to what firmware it has right now, but I've heard that could be a problem, so I have downloaded many of the old firmwares. I have to figure out which one to use.

The linux I was using is the one in the articles. The Auditor Security Collection shing. I've also tried Knoppix STD with similar results.

Thanks,

IIRC, you need a patch with the Orinoco driver in order to make it work with kismet/related tools. You might need to google for the patch. I use the Intel 2200BG to war drive with kismet. (ipw2200 drivers - version 1.0.4, ipw2200 1.0.4 firmware with the latest devel-sources of kismet)

Really.. I had no idea that you could use the Intel with Kismet. I'd love to be able to use the interal wifi.

I should just buy a Prism II card. All this would just go away. Anyone have an extra one they don't need any more?

The latest driver release (1.0.4) has support for monitor mode. It still has some quirks but for the most part, I can't find any glitches.
