Got wifi a/b/g pci card with WPA for my T23 from Newegg !

#1 Post by Smiley » Tue May 24, 2005 9:54 pm

Hey guys:

I finally managed to upgrade the wifi pci in my T23 to a/b/g plus WPA encryption - all for only $38 from Newegg, including shipping! Check this out: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833106219

What made me took the plunge was the encouraging customer reviews at the Newegg website - all of them installed this Intel wifi card in different brands of laptops and were very happy with it.

However, one trade-off for T23 owners. The native b wifi pci card in the T23 is a combo, i.e. for wifi and dialup modem. So, in the T23 pci compartment, there are 3 wires connected to the IBM High Rate wireless pci, one for main antenna, one for aux antenna, and the third wire - a thin black ribbon-like wire is for dialup modem. But this new Intel a/b/g pci card that I got is not a combo. In exchange for upgrading to g wifi with WPA, I have to give up the dialup modem capability, which is okay with me since I've stopped using dialup.

I don't know how many T23 owner searched so hard to upgrade their wifi card, but I'm grateful to those Newegg customers with such useful feedback.

I heard the same problem, that it must be an IBM card or you would get a BIOS error.

Only for the newer models, the older ones do not have the bios check.

Installation was smooth. Did not encounter any BIOS error. Used only the software from the provided CD. The card I purchased is factory fresh, made in April 2005, a few week ago, in Malaysia. The Intel techie told me the driver is still current and no update is found necessary. The reason I contacted Intel is because I didn't know what to do with the extra third (black) wire in my T23. Another call to IBM confirms that the black wire is for dialup modem, and since the Intel card does not cover dialup, the IBM technie suggested leaving it untethered. The other alternative pci card that I briefly considered is shown below, but the description mentioned certain incompatibility with Thinkpads:

Netegriti:

For just $38 I think the Intel card is worth the upgrade. However, if anyone knows of a pci combo that truly includes dialup as well as a/b/g wireless, I wouldn't mind having the dialup capability as well, though I don't use it anymore, but just in case I run into the very rare situation that needs a dialup.

For my A30p, I had purchased a refurbished IBM 802.11g miniPCI adapter, and never got it to work (and got the duplicate ethernet error on startup).

I did eventually get the original IBM 802.11b adapter to support WPA-PSK TKIP (but not AES).

After reading your message, and seeing the low price.... I ordered one from NewEgg.

I just installed it, inserted the included CD into my DVD drive, and it worked! No BIOS errors of any kind, it just worked flawlessly, the connection is fast, and now I can use WPA-PSK AES.

Highly recommended!

I was also shopping for an abg pc card, with the best range at the lowest price, for my other laptop, a Fujitsu, which has no built-in antenna, and finally bought this Orinoco card manuf by Enterasys from ebay for $40. Will arrive on tuesday June 7. Spoke with the techie at Enterasys to confirm that this has WPA encryption and he was very knowledgeable and pleasant. You could also contact him at Enterasys - John Martineau to check whether this card runs on ubuntu. Last one left on ebay:

Maybe other readers here who have used Orinoco pc cards would care to give an opinion.

BTW, can you guys comepare the battery life before and after the abg upgrade? I heard the Intel card is suppose to use a lot less power than the Proxim card. Thanks

Those are just standards for encryption (TKIP & AES) and QoS (quality of service).

What's the big deal? If you want WPA, its basis is either TKIP or AES, so 802.11i is kind of a must...unless all your interested in is WEP

These are all just standards (802.11i & 802.11e) that help make up and define the 802.11g protocol.

Is this the one that you're referring to?

If I don't need A, do you know if this works in the T23?

JBridges:

Can you please supply me the URL for the software with the WPA feature that you got for your previous b card? Thanks.
