T60 XGA and T60p board

#1 Post by CPC464 » Sat Nov 08, 2014 9:16 am

Hi,
after years of reading the forum I finally have decided myself to register (A bit too late, since, in my opinion, we are sadly in the twilight of Thinkpads -Thank you, Lenovo-). I'm a proud Thinkpad owner since the A20m era.

Recently I had a problem with a T60 (15", XGA, ATI). I've bought it second hand and "perfectly working". But It didn't work so good. As it had been really cheap it was no problem (or that was what I thought), since I had a replacement working T60p board at home.

The problem is, that, after having replaced the T60 board with the T60p one, the internal display doesn't ever power up. All the green lights work, and the computer runs well on external monitor.

I've read in this forum that every T60 Mobo should be compatible with every screen mounted in a T60, but this seems to be a case of incompatibility.

BTW, the problem with the original board was weird. When the laptop was switched on, it works normally for a couple of minutes, until the system warms up. After that, it begings to slow down a lot, almost freezing, making the computer unusable. I've thought of an CPU/GPU overheating issue, but that is discarted, the fan is clean and works OK, and TP fan control shows temperatures around 60°C when the computer freezes. And I've tested the HD. It works fine. I can't boot a Live-CD or Live-USB because the system freezes always after a couple of minutes of use (less than 1 minute, if it is warm, more than 2 minutes if it is cold).

I've decided to directly change the motherboard, but now I've found myself with this compatibility problem between board and display. Is there anything I can do without looking for another board or another display?

Thank you!

Use a flashlight and point it from above at a sharp angle at the screen.
You might just see the 'desktop' picture.
Also check the fuse immediately to the right of the LCD connector.
If that is 'gone', your backlight is not lit, hence the dark screen.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Hi,
I had already tried that, but the whole display is off, not only the backlight, I can't see anything with. All indicator lights in the inverter board are working normally.

Furthermore, I've tested the mobo with another 15" SXGA+ LCD and the display works, but the XGA screen is simply dead when connected to this motherboard... And the 15" XGA still works fine when connected to the old motherboard. It's only that the XGA simply doesn't work at all connected to the T60p mobo.

BTW:
- T60p mobo's FRU is 42T0153.
- T60 defective mobo's FRU is 42T0120.

Do you replace the LCD itself, or a complete lid?

Actually I replaced the motherboard, so the LCD has got its own lid, inverter and cable. When I tried the T60p board with a SXGA+ LCD, I did it too with a complete LCD encased in its lid and without dissasembling the LCD lid, just by pluggin the ribbon cable in the mainboard.
