The forgotten "Z" driver issues

#1 Post by schen » Sun Nov 09, 2014 3:06 pm

I had an old Z61m project that got back-burnered some time ago due to non-functioning WiFi slot. However, due to cleaning out of my old PATA notebook drives, I traded for a working Z61m "bottom". It's been a fun little project, and got all the old upgrades that the original machine was supposed to get such as a T7200 CPU, set of 2Gb sticks of RAM (yes, I'm aware of the BIOS limitation of this generation machines), a Atheros "N" WiFi card  (after an "No 1802" hack), and a 160Gb SSD.

Windows 7 loaded beautifully and it runs nicely, however I've run into a couple of head-scratchers :? that have me stumped. "1", I can't seem to get any driver to work for the SD card reader. I'm 100% certain that I've gotten those readers from this gen to work under 64-bit W7 before! I've tried both the TI driver as well as the Ricoh, and can't get either to go. The second my be just one of those "cheapo" Chinese product issue, but here it is anyway in case someone recognizes the problem. I pick up a one of those generic PCI Express to USB 3.0 hoping that it'll allow me some transfer speed upgrade with all my newer external drives. So far, I haven't been able to get drivers loaded on it, and the disk is at best difficult to work with since it's apparently a "generic" load for a number of devices and not just the USB3.0 adapter!

I'm open for thoughts.

You'll have to dig *deep* in the "Legacy Section" of Lenovo Forums, but here's what I can tell you:

There's a post of mine with a link to HP Vista driver that resolves this card reader issue...I know it sounds insane, but that's the way I got those working on my past Z61m units.

I just don't visit that place anymore...so you're on your own, old friend.

Good luck.

For the card reader - did you try the XP driver? Sometimes it might work...
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/migr-64419

For the USB3 card - which one is it?

Generally, if you look up the PCI device IDs of said devices in the device manager, you can search the web for drivers by device ID, and this is how you might find compatible drivers (e.g., the HP Vista variants that George mentioned).

The USB 3.0 Card is marked as follows:

AKE USB 3.0 Card, Express 54mm

I'll see if I can dig that legacy driver out. I tried the XP driver and it didn't work for me. I've had it work on occasion as well, just not this time.

Thanks for the help guys. I finally got both problems resolved. As usual, George was right on the mark and the driver in the old archive did the trick. And after looking through all the drivers on the disk provided with the PC Express 54 card, I found the correct one under a completely different folder than the one listed in the so-called "documentation"...., and not even under the "driver" sub-folder, but under the root instead!
