Tips and Tricks for Trackpoint + Current Ultranav Drivers

A while back I posted a thread with a recommendation to use a specific old Ultranav driver so that middle-mouse button functionality would be preserved. Well, it seems to result in some system instability on Win8.1 so I knew I needed to switch to newer Ultranav drivers. But that would mean a broken middle mouse button on the trackpoint, right? Wrong!

There is an easy workaround. Open the Run prompt (Win+R) and run regedit. Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\UltraNavPS2

Change the TrackPointMode DWORD value to 2214. Reboot. Bam, the middle mouse should now work as expected!

This actually works on ALL trackpoints as far as I can tell (tested on a W520 and T420 as well). On some models you MIGHT need to change the TrackPointModeFunction DWORD value to 10 if the scroll icon pops up when you middle-click on things like links and browser tabs, but that was not needed on my T61.

Another annoyance that I found was that the trackpad and trackpoint (including buttons) would stop responding while typing. That is a problem if you are playing a game with the WASD keys and using the trackpoint. In Windows 8, you can easily turn this off. Press Win+W, type "mouse" and open Mouse and Touchpad Settings. Under the Touchpad section there is a combobox with options to select for how long to turn the mouse functions off when typing. I changed it to "No Delay" and now I can use the trackpoint buttons while pressing keys!
