FS: Thinkpad 360CSE

#1 Post by delete_this » Sat Dec 06, 2014 9:37 pm

Hello Thinkpad Fans,

In a recent house clean, I came across an old Thinkpad 360CSE (a forgotten cast away from a previous job). I plugged it in, and to my surprise - it (mostly) works - 1GB HDD, 20MB RAM, and working floppy drive, but the screen appears dead. I was able to attach it to an external monitor to check out the components (along with a healthy dose of Win95 flashbacks).

I'd give it a 6.5/10 in condition - there are scratches, a crack in one of the hinges, and the rubber "feet" seem to be literally melting away (they leave a black smear that's difficult to remove on everything they touch).

Does anyone have an idea what this is worth? By extension, as I have no time nor the money to put into restoring this vintage wonder, is anyone interested in purchasing this?

If you'd like, we can move this to the Marketplace to help you sell it.

In the meantime, is there a sliding toggle switch for the LCD? I had a similar model where the switch stuck. Moving it back and forth freed it up.

There are two sliders on the 360, contrast and brightness. Try to move them, like Steve suggests, and also try to hold a flashlight up to your display to see of the icons are visible then. That helps determining of you have a defective backlight or a defective display.

A 360CS was my first Thinkpad back in 1999. I still own it, plus a 360CSE, so I try to keep an eye on the 360 status. Very few seem to own 360s, and I don't see many for sale anymore. So if you're not planning on keeping it, do indeed put it up for sale here. If I had been living in the US still, I would have picked it up for spare parts, but shipping makes that too expensive.

Thanks for the suggestions on fiddling with the sliders on the LCD - unfortunately, no matter what, the screen continues to appear dead. I may not have a bright enough flashlight, but I can't seem to notice any pixels on the screen, so I'm not sure if it's only the backlight, or both backlight and LCD screen.

Please feel free to move this to the Marketplace!

Thanks again for the comments.
