Order in March 2005 in Switzerland.
Estimated Ship Date
Having fun with mine. Very happy with the unit; I've yet to detect any stupid fan actions. It revs up when I first turn on the computer, but it stops after a few seconds and normal bootup appears.
Does anyone know if the recovery CDs, if I ordered them from IBM, would restore the whole hard drive to its original state and re-create the hidden partition if I destroy it?

Im in love
Ive owned four other brandname laptops before this Thinkpad, I have to say I think Ive finally found the one. I know it's only been a day, but this thing is so thin and light, the keyboard is number one, the screen is nice, Im even impressed with the speakers!
Upgrades are in the works.. but I think I finally found THE laptop.. dunno why I never gave them a chance before..
Im in the process of wiping out the hd roast, Im using this guide:
http://www.4saad.com/WhatsNew/Fresh_XP_ ... /Step1.htm. It may be of some service to you, if you haven't already seen it.
The fan comes on at reasonable times; startup, heavy imaging and DVD playing.. it is quiet for everything else.. Ive had the thing running since 9am this morning.. the heat everyone talks about is something I am definately not experiencing, it is cool/warm but no way near what heavy critics describe. I took a chance based on these critics... and am ever glad I did!
Cheers

Evilest, I feel your pain. Mine got stuck in customs! The tracking information still shows "Import scan" at 12:50am this morning in Ontario, CA as the latest piece of information. Nothing about customs or a scheduled delivery date. I waited until after 10:30am and then dejectedly called UPS, who told me that it was being inspected by customs and the next delivery possibility would be by 10:30am tomorrow, but that wasn't a sure thing, and there is no Saturday delivery on this shipping option.
I am going to be really [censored] if I have to wait all the way until Monday.

been messing around with my NEW T43p for the pats like hour or so... gotta do the whole fresh install and stuff as i dont understand how i could POSSIBLY have 50+ running processes on a new computer...
i have the 2668G2U so its the 14 inch one and the fan as far as ive seen only comes up at boot up... normal usage so far (just messn around with things... playing 3d pinball... blah blah). honestly i was downright AMAZED at how quiet the machine is overall...! fingerprint reader took no time ot get used to however ive only been web browsing for a little bit stealing someones wireless internet...
gotta get the network password for mine lol
and in fact this is one of the first time's ive actually HELD a thinkpad... it looks MUCH better than it does online.... i know they go for the classy business look but it is actually really appealing to my tastes at least...

Ontario customs is slow, this is the same thing that happened to me, my lappy was in Ontario for a couple days taking in the sites of wonderful Inland Empire. Muhahaha. Anyhow, it'll be at your door soon enough. Trust me its worth the wait.spwhitty wrote:Evilest, I feel your pain. Mine got stuck in customs! I can't wait until I get to load, like, SimCity 4 and The Sims 2 on this... I know that a 128MB graphics card is probably overkill, but I'm coming from 32MB Radeon VE (7000) (which died) and a 8MB Intel integrated. =)
IBM's software installer is very very impressive. I've always had to do collect my drivers manually, and then the manufacturer stops updating them, so I always end up using the drivers that are 4 years old. I had no idea it was this simple.
Fan is still very reasonable on my 14.1".

I thought it was a big deal at first.. that is until I discovered the Software Installer. [censored] thing installs whatever critical software and drivers your specific system needs, with no help from you! Does it all itself. Piece of cake.

Pretty sure it is a conservative date. Should ship a couple of weeks before
that date according to my rep.

I've considered whether I should have gone with the fingerprint reader. I realized it's another doodad to break and I'm the only user of this and I type my password so fast it's easy enough not to have it.

redrumchoy, I wiped the drive after making the recovery CDs and reinstalled windows. And just like JujitsuFreak said, Software Install *REALLY* helped with the automated driver fetching and all. After the windows and driver were done (which I forgot how long it took), my applications took only 40 minutes (ALL OF THEM!). It used to take 3+ hours on any of my other computers, so I'd end up installing them as I needed them, but the G2U responded to every thing I pushed at it.
My bootup time has been around 20 seconds as a result, which is a few seconds shorter than before, and I still don't think that's the fastest it can do it since I've only timed them after massive installations (and post-install scripts and such).
But if you're worried about not being able to get the drivers or programs back because of a reinstall, I wouldn't worry about it - software install really helped out there. I've never seen a utility quite like this. =)
I actually think the G2u is a big too quick for me too - I'm actually getting tired from using it after 2 hours. lol. and I have my first driving lesson today in 7 hours. I'm really happy about it! oh yea, did I mention that it was a lot thinner and lighter than I thought it was going to be?

Roast or Jujitsufreak, could u tell me how many processes now run in your background after your clean install
if POSSIBLE i'd LOVE gto see a picture of your process tree (to see wwhich if any processes u got rid of after the reinstall

I realized why there's so many processes, even after a "clean" install. Most of them are small IBM (and synaptics for touchpad, ati for graphic card, and intel for wireless) utilities that handle certain calls, like the volume buttons, IBM provided mapping (which I just finished the hack for the registry, so one down), IBM battery controller, da da da. The reason why the computer isn't lagging is (1) they're not based on stupud things like .NET/C# and are probably very efficient, and (2) it's a fast computer. So the tiny processes aren't really bothering.redrumchoy wrote:Roast or Jujitsufreak, could u tell me how many processes now run in your background after your clean install

As a result, if you mean "clean" as in "just install windows without doing any software updates", I can cite that from previous experience - ~20. If you mean clean, and selective IBM utility install (or elimination, depending on how you look at it), well, um.. I'll get back to you on that. At the moment I'm running 38 processes, but I haven't rebooted yet. =)
Well, my order status changed today from 7/7 to 8/8! So I called, and the rep says more like 7/1. 2-3 weeks to get in stock + 1 to configure. Who knows? Finished scaling down. Total background processes when idle is 21, including 3 svchosts, taskmgr to pull up the list, and the zone alarm client.
The list and descriptions of the 5 IBM utilities that "made the cut":
ibmpmsvc.exe - IBM PM Service. Listed under Services. Provides Fn, Fn+F3, Fn+F4, Fn+F12.
TPHDEXLG.exe - IBM HDD APS Logging Service. Listed under Services. Probably reports to Event Log.
TPHKMGR.exe - Provides Fn+F9, th eIBM EasyEject utility, and hotkey button presses to TPONSCR.exe.
TPONSCR.exe - Provides the on screen display of volume, brightness and thinklight when their respective Fn+key is activated. Depends on TPHKMGR.exe. All key-combos will perform its action whether or not this program, or TPHKMGR.exe, is running.
vtserver.exe - Related to the fingerprint software with automatic login.
List of things that may be of interest to you that I kept at first, then decided to get rid of (so they at least appeared to be useful):
TpKmpSvc.exe - IBM KCU Service. Listed under Services. Handles IBM keyboard customization (I use Microsoft's remapkey.exe instead; it modifies the registry).
TpScrex.exe - Provides Fn+Space, the zoom function. (had to go to the registry to modify this; the hotkey utility has its list of programs to start stored there)
TpShocks.exe - Provides system tray icon for IBM HDD APS (the hard-drive stopping thing).

And this is why I always do a clean install.

Sorry I haven't been here for a bit, Ive been having too much toying around!
redrum,
What bug are you talking about?
After doing a wipe of my system, originally having 56-58 processes, I now have 48-49. I too realize that those minor processes through IBM are really not consuming much thus they are very efficient. But after the wipe I noticed a dead pixel and I too did a test the first day I got it and it wasn't there. So it appeared after the wipe of the OS. Wouldn't ya know, it went away after 5 minutes? Wtf?
Hasn't been back for more than two days.. I think..
But Id be interested in learning about this bug as I fiddled a lot with the system... probably did something screwy.. right now Im trying to figure how to get my Access IBM button working since the wipe. Other than that, Im pretty much golden.
Oh yea, patient future T owners, you may end up with a nice surprise! Keep calling, keep bugging, and demand faster ship dates.. nicely of course. You will be satisfied when you receive your new baby.
