x61s keyboard is not responding

#1 Post by Nepyk » Wed Jan 07, 2015 4:15 pm

Hey,

I have deassable my x61s in order to clean a fan, however now my keyboard is not working any more. PC is not turning on. If I remove bios battery for a while and plug it on, PC turns on automatically, however, keyboard still is not responding. What could I do wrong? I do not see any visible damage to keyboard or connection.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!

Certainly sounds like an issue with the keyboard. Can you verify that all the traces on the ribbon are intact? Are you sure the connection to the motherboard is fully seated?

It seems that everything is OK, however if were are any special way to check traces; connections seems firm (You can hear a click then I attach keyboard to slot).

You will need a piece of test equipment normally called a "multimeter". Units today come with digital displays and typically are capable of measuring voltage, current (most models) and for testing fuses or the connections on a cable, resistance. Historically this would be called an "ohmmeter". By placing the two test leads of the multimeter across the ends of the fuse or at either end of a trace on the ribbon cable, you would be able to tell if the fuse/trace is still good (resistance reading at 0 ohms) or if it is bad (resistance reading will be much greater than 0 ohms). Basic meters like this cost about US$25 and can be found in most electronic parts store, hardware stores, or online.
