R60e power jack workaround

#1 Post by 4eyes » Sat Jan 10, 2015 5:22 pm

Hi all,
Does anybody perhaps have experience of a temporary workaround to wire up a defective power jack?

The (yellow) jack on the R60e has finally bit the dust and I need a quick fix until a replacement can be had (which is not so easy in a Third World country - S America).

The jack in question is here:
http://www.amazon.com/IB581600-IBM-Lapt ... =pd_cp_e_0

Power supply has the big barrel "advanced" connector:

If anyone knows a fix how to configure the five wires leading to the motherboard connector with the power supply I'd be grateful to hear it!

There is also one wire from the jack grounded to the laptop chassis.

Thanks in advance.

reds are POS - inside of the grey barrel-plug
blacks are NEG - outside of the grey barrel-plug
blue is center-pin

Thanks very much for that RBS!

Only question is, the power supply has just two wires - braided outer and normal inner.

How to solve the blue wire "pin" issue - and also the single wire going from powe jack to chassis?

Many thanks in advance!

braided outer is NEG
inner is POS
ignore blue for the time being
Single wire to chassis is yet another NEG, but can also be ignored for the time being AFAIK.
Such a wire does not even exist in its sister T60.

Brief update:
Replacement part finally located - but from a T60.

From what you say, RBS, I can (eventually) just go ahead and install without caring about the NEG wire to chassis?

Very grateful for your advice! But your user name has stirred up fond memories of a previous trip around Ireland and revived a thirst for a certain stout unavailable in palatable form here in the heat of summer.

I never understood how people could drink that lukewarm cats-p!ss you find in most English pubs.
And it's true, in my hometown (Dublin/Ireland) they know how to brew what's really good for you: Guinness! 8)
Heck, they even used to give it in hospitals to mothers with new babies!

And yes, forget about that chassis-ground-wire.

Woah, woah, just one second here! LOL
The highest grade of that warm stuff is a fine tipple too, if you have the taste for it - but I do also have a certain weakness for the real black stuff too.
First ever trip to the emerald isle, in the company of a true Dubliner, went like this:
Dublin airport by mid-day, car hired, Shanahan's for the first couple of Guinness (for me, not the driver), drive down to Kerry, late lunch on the way and more black stuff to keep the wheels rolling, and then an almighty pub scene first nignt on the Ring of Kerry (next day was a public holiday).
Unforgettable experience!

And thanks very much for all the advice! :)

Sláinte!
