T60 was running hot
T60 was running hot
T60 starting randomly shutting down so I installed a cpu temp app and saw cpu temps of about 80 deg C. Then installed tpfan control and temps have dropped to about 65 deg C, thinking maybe a clogged up fan or need new thermal paste on cpu interface, any thoughts?

Re: T60 was running hot
Yes clogged fan would be the first place to look IMO

Re: T60 was running hot
Had the same problem with mine, more than one year ago, cleaned the fan and changed the thermal paste (MX4), so far so good.

Re: T60 was running hot
I've found the T61p heatsink is a good option, it cools much better and is an easy mod requiring only a minor mod to the retainer bracket.

Could you confirm if this will work for 14.1" [standard 4:3] T61 and if so, what modification(s) are needed and the part no?
Thank you very much

Re: T60 was running hot
Yes, the T61p heatsink can be used on the T61 with Intel or nVidia graphics. The intel models run so cool that it's not needed, but if you want to use one just remove the grey pad from the platform that cools the chipset controller and replace it with thermal paste for cooling the integrated Intel GPU. I have some of these heatsinks if you want to do the mod. I did some testing with one once and found under light use I didn't have to run the fan at all and if you are one to run the computer in bed while someone is sleeping next to you, you can set the fan on manual mode at a slow speed and you may not need any more cooling than that.EAkamai wrote:Alohs Tuus!TuuS wrote:I've found the T61p heatsink is a good option, it cools much better and is an easy mod requiring only a minor mod to the retainer bracket.

btw, manual mode will turn off if the temps rise and more cooling is needed, so there is no risk involved.
The advantage to the Intel fan is they are generally cheaper and you can buy generic replacement motors for them very cheap. The advantage to the T61p is they seem to be more durable and don't require as much fan, mostly because of the extra heatpipe IMO.
On a T60 the case is different, the T60 discrete fan is similar to the T61 intel fan with a couple weights added to it to help cool the discrete ATI gpu. They also use those horrible grey silicone pads to cool the GPU. Thank God they don't use them on GPU chips anymore. Anyone who has worked on T60p models often has seen how they can get burned. When I do the T61p heatsink conversion I use thermal paste on the GPU and I've seen temps more than 10c degrees lower. You also need to cut/file/grind a small notch on the T60 retainer clip so that it fits over the larger heatsink. It's a great mod and basically the same thing we do when building T60/61 frankenpads.
By the way, if anyone is interested in building one of these frankenpads I still have some kits available including the motherboard, cpu and all other parts needed to upgrade your T60 to T61. Also while they last I'm going to be offering some free cpu upgrades tot he basic kits.
I also got a bunch of Genuine IBM/Lenovo NOS boards and refurbished boards with 2010 era gpu chips for all sizes of T61 and most R61.
Sorry if I'm getting a little off topic here, but if you have any further questions you're welcome to PM me.

Re: T60 was running hot
Update: I opened the unit up and removed and cleaned the fan and cleaned the chip and applied new thermal paste and all seems good now ie. no more random shut downs
