Touchpad problems?

Does anyone know if there is a replaceable cover on the touchpad on my T42 or is it a whole unit? My touchpad is developing a slight wear mark in the middle and I would like to eventually replace it. What is the cost to replace it with a new one? Do you think this would be a warranty item since the laptop is not even a year old yet?

I wouldn't hurt to find out if it's a warranty issue, as IBM has often been great about stuff like that.

Otherwise, I THINK, but I'm not sure, that the whole palmrest area is what must be replaced. And I don' think they're that expensive. I'd guess sub 50$.

But, I'm not sure about that either...

Plinkerton is right. The touchpad is part of the palmrest, and the part number for this is 91P8398.

I couldn't find this part in the IBM maintenance parts website (strangely enough). However, I found that part here:

It retails for about $70.00 there, whereas the touchpadless palmrest for your computer can be had for $20.00 from IBM. Do you really like the touchpad so much? I don't plan on using mine to tell you the truth.

You might have better luck finding this part for a good price in eBay.
