R61 problems with screen/gpu

#1 Post by someone » Mon Feb 02, 2015 3:29 am

Hi,

I have an R61 model 8919-CTO which suddenly acts weird. It has an T8100 and an nvidia 140m. The last 2 days was getting hot and it suddenly started to have black screen. Although backlit works. If you let cool down for a bit and then try to reopen it opens but when you try to access the gpu with gpuz then it appears pink colors and gets a black screen. Is it because the gpu is not properly cooled or it has started failing? The gpu is not replaced, can I get another gpu and use it? If not what type of motherboards, I could get?

You have a dying nVidia GPU (cannot be replaced, it is soldered onto the motherboard).
Model 8919 is a 15.4" widescreen R61.
Get the HMM here: http://www.thinkpads.com/support/hmm/hm ... 549_05.pdf
Motherboards are item # 18, starting on HMM page 163.
If you can live with less powerful graphics, I would urge you to get (any) Intel GM965 motherboard instead!
They should be a straight swap.

Do you know if it'll work if I get a T61 or T61p motherboard?
I know that the gpu is soldered, i do wonder what chances does the reball has to work for it.

A T61 mobo almost certainly will NOT fit.
You can buy new GPU chips, but nearly every seller (at least on eBay) tries to flog fake "new" chips.
A reflow by itself does you no good, as the GPU is busted INSIDE the chip itself.
If you insist on another nVidia mobo, get one dating from 2008/August (08/08) or later.
Anything older is bound to fail also.

Are nvidia chips sold standalone?
For R61 the options are far less than for T61/T61p.

Don't even think about buying a GPU chip, unless you really know what you are doing, and have the equipment!
And an R61 only wants R61 motherboards for its specific size (15.4" in your case).

2 more questions since it seems the heatsink was not properly sat on the board, fortunately i do not see any pink, green lines. Do you know if a T61p heatsink can be fit in R61(with the 3 pipes)? Do you know if i can get a better fan than the one of R61?

That may or not mean anything...

No and no.

R61 heatsink is perfectly fine when fitted properly.

I know that that's why i want to work the laptop a bit to see. On idle the gpu is on 56 degrees maybe with some arctic silver gets down to 50
