I WOULD like to upgrade my stock 256MB to something like 768MB or 1.25GB. However, i just WISH IT WOULD ARRIVE FIRST!!! Taking bloody forever.
Seems companies are recieving Dell Latitudes with the 1.7s and 1.8s. Maybe b/c dell has purchasing power, maybe not. Not sure. My notebook on the other hand is taking more than its fair share of time.
Also, seems that local sales that are going on are anticipant of notebook purchases (and upgrades for those purchase) being made before the fall "off to college" semester. Thus, there are no SO-DIMMS to be found anywhere in sale papers or elsewhere.
Otherwise, im not sure about the notebook in the signature. What is the maximum speed that i can upgrade the unit from (i.e.: 3.2Ghz s-1 pc3200 or 2.7Ghz s-1 pc2700). Is it dual-channel ready? Anyone know where i can find kingston or crucial 512MB or 1GB SO-DIMMS, sub-$50 and sub-$100, respectively?

This Kingmax works just fine in my 2378-FVU. I paid $50.49 on 5/11 and thought the price couldn't fall much further. It's now $44.49 shipped.

I stopped running Memtest86+ after 3 passes. By the way, version 1.55 will report memory speed as 266 Mhz. Don't be alarmed because this is simply a known cosmetic bug. The actual speed is determined by BIOS and should be 333 Mhz.

Thanks andyk, but what about the other question.
How up to what speed on the memory will the motherboard support.
so-dimms with pc2700 as with the pre-installed 256 already in it, or the pc3200 id ideally like to pickup?
edit: i do know that adding the 3200 module will actually only make the notebook operate as fast as the 2700, but if i do upgrade to 1.5GB later, it'd be nice to have it operate at the max 3200 later on. If ya catch my drift

Indeed, very nice to see Crucial at $144 down from $164 - DDR2-4200.emorphien wrote:Very nice to see the Crucial 1gb 4200 DDR2 ram has dropped to the same price. I'd love to get Crucial for my T43p, but it used to be about $160/1gb. It's still about $15 more per stick than the Kingston at Newegg and Mwave.
Wow! Kingston at $120 for 1GB DDR2-4200 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820144183
Which will perform better, Kingston or Crucial?
Thanks

They'll probably perform the same. And it's a laptop so I'd be more concerned about stability than raw performance. Kingston is an extremely reputable RAM manufacturer, like Crucial (or Corsair, Mushkin, etc). Check mwave, they have the same Kingston ram as Newegg and they usually have it in stock.

Yes, that is true. The speed of the memory is only as fast as it's slowest module. Read up at various websites that cover this topic.
However, if I DO put in the pc3200 module, then will it somehow adversely affect my machine?? Or is the t42 board even CAPABLE of speeds above the standard ddr333 speeds?

If it's for an Intel chipset, especially the 915 series, check out this thread.

Heh, T43(p)-ers are the only ones that usually end up with the 915.
Which doesnt answer my question i guess o well...

My default preference has always been Crucial, but IMO unless you're obsessive you don't really need to spend more for it.T41mbi wrote:OK so money no option

You should generally consider the basics youll be running standard with the LAPTOP like lan, OS, winamp / WMP, firefox / IE. And then calculate what else youll be using. Generally a gig is overkill for most people. Heck, t42 s are overkill for most people.
BTW, did some research, the t42 board with the 855 chipset wont use the speed on a pc3200 So-DIMM, the max it can do is pc2700. Something to consider when you make your RAM purchases.

I've had excellent luck with both Kingston and Crucial, and just buy whichever is cheaper for my application.
Last year Crucial was cheaper for 512MB DDR modules, so I put a Crucial 512MB module in old PowerBook. My My ThinkPad has a pair of 1GB Kingston modules in it (put the 512MB module from the T42p into my new PowerBook).
I used to use Toshiba notebooks and for years they (Toshiba) wouldn't support anything other than Kingston memory.

Has anyone try this 5% discount coupon code for Crucial?
I was actually looking to get more RAM for a PowerBook.

Crucial doesn't list memory for a T43 - 2687. Do you know if it's basically the same as if I was ordering it for a 2668? 200 pin DDR2 4200 ? Thanks..
I also looked above, Kingston, stability wise is a good pick right? On the same level as Crucial? I need to know cuz Kingston is $15 cheaper a gig.
Thanks

Thanks kaplanfx, but Im ordering within the next hour or two... good luck with your order. You got the Kingston right? for a T42, that would be a different chipset anyways.. I think that's 2700 or 3200... Im checking out the 4200.
Cheers

To answer a previous question about using PC3200 versus PC2700. I assume you are referring to a T40/41/42 series that use the 400MHz FSB chips. All of these mobos only support a max of PC2700, so using PC3200 RAM will do nothing as the mobo doesn't support it. Go with whatever is cheapest. And as long as the CAS latencies are the same between memory, performance won't differ.
Have used just about every ThinkPad since the T42 days...
nah I ordered the crucial, I had heard some negative comments about the Kingston Valueram and I couldn't determine which ram was being offered. I figured for the extra 20 bucks or so to get the crucial as my new T42 is my baby and needs the best parts.JujitsuFreak wrote:Thanks kaplanfx, but Im ordering within the next hour or two... good luck with your order. Running 2GB of Kingston ram in my T42p with excellent results. One of the sticks is their regular line and the other ValueRam, though of course without looking at the actual sticks, there is no way to tell them apart.
I believe the only difference is the warranty and the sticker they put on it. THe chips themselves look identical.
