X31 for programming

#1 Post by wolfman » Sat Jun 19, 2004 8:47 pm

Hello, I'm currently looking at an X31 series thinkpad with a 12.1 inch 1024x768 display. I intend to use this machine and it's great battery life at the bookstore frequently and I want to use it to program on (eclipse, weblogic workshop, vs.net). I'll be using the machine for up to 8-10 hours at a time maybe 1-2 days a week. I'm a little concerned about the usability of the 12.1 inch display for that time frame per day (I can make due with 1024x768 resolution).

Also, how close will the keyboard be to that of my R40 series thinkpad? I'm hoping it's got the same feel and usability that this machine does. Thanks for any feedback you can provide. I can get an awesome deal on an X31 right now and I'm very tempted to purchase but want to get some feedback before I order. Thanks!!!!

I just got an X31, so maybe I can help: I was used to my 19" CRT, but working on the X31's 12" screen is absolutely no problem at all. Text is clear and crisp, and not a problem for working for a long time.

The keyboard... I read a lot of reviews that say that the keyboard is close to a desktop keyboard, but it's not. This is my first notebook computer since my Thinkpad 350C (~10 years old), but there's a definite difference between a full-size keyboard and the X31's - namely, not as much travel for the keys. Surprisingly, however, I make very few typing mistakes - surprising because my hands are huge. I was worried about the small backspace and enter keys too, but there have been no problems with either so far. To sum: not a desktop keyboard, but pretty darn good anyway.

I love this machine. I'm glad I got an X31 over a T-series notebook, mainly because it's so portable and because it's pretty much the perfect size for me. Hope this helps!
