@ theterminator93:

Thanks for sharing the results about your new speedy T42p, upgraded with a SATA SSD! :thumbs-UP:

Interesting! I had not before heard about SATA-to-PATA/IDE adapters for NGFF/M.2 SSD's but you got me Google'ing and I discovered e.g. M.2 NGFF (SATA) SSD to 2.5" IDE/PATA adapter with case (however using the somewhat "troublesome" conversion chip JM20330) which is probably (?) made by Sintech. Other similar (or the same, sold under a different name?) adapters includes the SLNX1016 NGFF M.2 to 44-Pin IDE Adapter and M-ware® Adapter NGFF M.2 b+m Key SSD to Mini-IDE 44pin ST5113 ID14977. Also, if I search for "NGFF SSD" on Newegg I find a product described as "Akust IDE 44pin to M.2 SSD Adapter with 2.5" Housing" but if following the product-link (Model # ZO05-0021-AKS, Item # 9SIA3TR2AR2551), Newegg report "Sorry, We can't find this Item." ?!? I also can't find it on Akust.com own homepage... spooky?

Anyway, before going with one of these JM20330-based adapters, I would encourage you to read about the not-so-few users who have had various problems with this chip... you'll find links to various threads in the sticky GUIDE: Make your T4x *FAST* by replacing the HDD with a SSD!

There are two adapters I've looked at, one that is 1.8" for an T41T and one that is 2.5. I hadn't looked at the chips powering them but the price is so cheap, I didn't bother with much research. The good thing about ngff m.2 is that there are adapters for every disk standard and they can be slipped into a 2.5 Sata adapter or a USB 3 adapter. I just priced a few on eBay and I could have all three for less than $30. If the PATA adapter didn't work out, I'd just use the drive in a Sata adapter. My X61Ts are also candidates for an SSD. I've got one in my X41T and the speed and battery life improvement are impressive.

The ngff drives are inexpensive and from what I've been reading are the wave of the future so they are going to become even more common as time goes on. There are some new 64gb ones for $32 right now and I've seen new 256gb drives go as low as $60.
Currently using: A W500, a W520, an X201T, an X220T, an X61T, a 14" T60P,a 15" UXGA T60P and a W700.
Currently idle: A spare W500, a spare X61T, a spare W700, a 14" T61, a 15" SXGA+ T60, a 14" T60, and my first Thinkpad, a 770X.
