Would this SSD work with X220?

#1 Post by hyde » Sun Feb 08, 2015 8:57 pm

After seeing how amazingly fast my coworker's carbon x1 is, I decided to look into getting an SSD.
Found this on SD today for $50

Would it work?
What kind of software do you use to transfer the contents of your HDD to SSD?
8/18/2011 - X220, Intel i5-2540M, 12.5" IPS, FingerPrint, Cam, BT, Intel 6205 Wifi, 8GB, U2312HM Mini Dock Plus 3
1/15/2012 - S405 (Wife's), AMD A6-4455M, 14", 4GB RAM, Windows 8
7/02/2015 - T450s Intel i5-5300U, 14" FHD IPS, FingerPrint, Cam, BT, SSD + M.2, Intel 7265, 12GB

No, it will not work since X220 doesn't have a M.2 slot.

It does have a mSATA slot if you are willing to give up WWAN, along with the "regular" HDD bay.

Personally, I always advise against cloning a spinning drive to an SSD and suggest a clean install.

Thank you. I can definitely try that but my recovery is located on spinning drive. Is it possible to do a clean install by using the recovery portion on HDD and install the brand new setup in SDD?
I don't have WWAN and I can give up the regular HDD bay then. Otherwise what would be the best way since there is no recovery media.

I am getting ready to buy this, which I see as a good deal at $135 for 250GB

Or this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-256GB-mSA ... B00IRRDJ4W

Although I can't tell the difference between the two Crucial ones listed above.

My pick would be MX200, followed by M550. I'd stay away from EVO due to its use of inferior TLC NAND.

Happy shopping.

MX200 it is, then! Thanks for the feedback. :thumbs-UP:

Side-Question: I thought we needed to remove the HDD, it looks as if X220 does not require HDD to be removed, is this correct?
I had no idea, does this mean we can have dual boot with SSD being clean install (restored from Q:) and HDD "old" install? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ48LTWo9CI

Hmm, Amazon Q&A had a response from Crucial claiming MX200 doesn't work with X220.. That's strange.
