My X40's frame is not flush with the screen - anyone else?

#1 Post by tbessie » Sat Jun 19, 2004 11:25 pm

I just noticed today that my new X40's screen has a small gap where it enters the frame on the bottom. Also, the piece of plastic over the status lights below the screen appears to be pealing away. All in all, it looks like the bottom part of the case is not 100% straight, but slightly warped (I can see down to the edge of the screen in the gap I described).

I'm beyond my 30 day return period, and I'm a bit of a perfectionist. This doesn't ruin anything, but for the price I paid for this thing, I'd think details like this would be watched by IBM.

Anyone else have these problems?

I would just send it to IBM to take a look at it. They'll fix it in a day, and you'll get it back the next day. But I think they'll just simply give you a replacement.

Yeah, I suppose I could do that

I'm just worried I'd get one with more bad pixels, or some other cosmetic--y defect like this.

Do they really have a quick turn-around time like that? And am I assured they'll send me a NEW replacement, rather than a refurb? (I'm actually JUST about to go over my 30 days... if I call it in on Monday, I'll get in under the wire).

My main concern is, is it worth the hassle? Of course, only I can decide that, but I just wonder if lots of these machines have small issues like this. My A31 had no flaws whatsoever.

You can call them on weekends too. You won't get a refurbished model. We are talking about the Big Blue. A replacement might take longer than fixing the TP. If you get a replacement, it'll probably won't have any problem, since they'll double check before they send it out to you.

G-Man, you seem pretty optimistic

I am not so sure they'd do something like make an extra-special check for me that it was a good unit... they're becoming a lot like any other big computer company (witness their outsourcing building all the machines).

I have a feeling that they'd just put in an order for another one.

It's not so awful... after all, I can just reglue the status light template, and the misfit screen frame isn't going to kill the computer (unless the cause is a frame that's slightly too small for the screen in it, which could cause screen damage some years down the line possibly), and I hate the whole rigamarole of sending stuff back.

But... I WOULD like a "perfect" machine without any flaws, at this price.

I doubt IBM is going to go back to their old ways of better quality over cheaper (relatively) machines.

Okay, I called IBM today

Nothing they could do, short of replacing it, and they said it would go through normal ordering procedure, and no special handling would happen.

The question is moot, though, because it's been just beyond 30 days from date of shipment... I thought it was 30 days from date of arrival, but no, it's shipment, so there's a chance they'd keep the X40 for awhile and poke at it because I got it back (unless they decided to send me a new one). I'll just live with the substandard fitting and think twice about IBM next time.
