Just added to collection - 360C

#1 Post by fultontech » Thu Feb 26, 2015 5:22 pm

8MB RAM
340HDD
All covers are there.

Now, I'm going to test installing AIX 1.3. Excuse me while I format floppies for the next several hours.

I'm going to use another old PC-DOS system with a CD ROM to ferry data to floppy.

Nice collectible.

Yes, make sure to give us some pictures of it. Always nice to see these. I have two 360Cs myself, one working and one under restoration. This was the first Thinkpad I ever used, in 1999. We had AutoCad installed, and it worked ok, but it felt pretty outdated already at that point. Hardware developed fast back in those days. No wonder my boss' brand new 770 made such an impression. :) My machines have the DSTN panel, while I think you have TFT.

I'll take some pictures over the weekend and post them (I have to read the rules again then figure out if it's easier to resize the photos on the computer or on the phone at the time of taking).
Yes the screen is very nice. Someone else had forced the keyboard open with the lock engaged and the hasp must have came out. They put it in backward so it didn't line up completely and jammed the keyboard closed no matter what. It took me a little while to figure out what happened and fix it.

To show pictures in any other sub-forum other than Pictures of your ThinkPad & desk setup, it is best to upload them to e.g. Imgur, tinypic, photobucket etc.
Then copy just the LINK to those picture(s) into your post like this:

That model makes a nice Windows 3.1 machine. Nice to see other people collecting the oldies.

It had 95 on it when I got it. I did a FDISK and got PC-DOS 6.3 back on it. I'm going to try AIX1.3 this weekend since all the specs match. If it doesn't work, I'll put it back as close to factory as I can.

Just as an update;

If you have a choice between getting cheap diskettes or brand name, I have learned the cheap ones may not be read correctly the older the floppy drive.

IBM USB Floppy: Format no errors almost all disks.

T30 Ultrabay Floppy: Format no errors almost all disks.

365CSD: external Floppy: 60% error/failure rate

360C: Internal floppy: 98% error/failure - out of 50 disks only one (1) so far can be formatted and read with no errors on all systems.

So I'm using this one disk to build PC-DOS and windows on the 365 and then install on the 360. So much for installing AIX and all 15-30 disks for the base OS.

Follow up. AIX 1.3 will not install on the 360C. Seem the NVRAM write access address may be different and will not allow updating of time/date/TZ information.
While the 365CSD does allow the NVRAM update, the newer Cyrix CPU seems to cause an error after the boot floppies are done.
