Grpaphics Display update problem on a T420 4180-FB5

#1 Post by baertracks » Fri Mar 06, 2015 5:32 pm

I am trying to refurbish a T420 laptop (model 4180-FB5) for a colleague in DR Congo. This laptop has a 14in 1600x900 LCD with Intel HD Graphics.

After a clean install of Win7 Home 64bit I ran the numerous Windows and ThinkVantage updates that were prompted. I've run those updates on many other T420 laptops without a problem. However, this time I encountered a problem that forced the laptop into a reboot cycle. It would not even allow me to to to a previous restore point.

After re-installation of Win7, and a systematic one-by-one installation of updates I determined that the problem update was for the graphics adapter (Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2 Intel HD Grapics 3000).

I have tried to do that update by various means, e.g., using ThinkVantage, using Windows Update and using the Intel Drivers Update Utility. It always gives the same result (but thankfully now allows me to go back to the previous restore point). I'm OK (sort of) in using the generic VGA graphics adapter, but I'm concerned that the colleague that I give this to might run a "recommended update", encounter the same problem, and not know how to fix it.

Meanwhile, on a related note, the laptop Control Panel reports a Windows Experience index of "1" due to its mediocre graphics performance. I suppose this is due to the fact that the display is currently being managed by a generic Standard VGA graphics adapter.

Suggestions? Questions?

Thanks in advance for any assistance that you can provide.

Can you try to locate an older version of the Intel driver in question? I've had issues twice - not on a T420 though - where their "latest and greatest" video drivers got me to the point of re-installing the OS from scratch.

Good idea.
I'll take a look.
Thanks!

I'm having this same issue, endless reboot cycle when try to apply graphics driver. Can't find older drivers than the ones on the Lenovo, Intel, and Windows Updates.

I was able to fix the problem that I was having as originally posted in this thread. However, I can't recall at the moment which driver I finally ended up using (I tried so many). I think that it may have been h4d211ww.exe. At least that looks like the last one that I downloaded.

I just tried that (h4d211ww.exe) driver, did not work for me. Thank you for posting it though.

Sorry about that.
Have you tried 83de50ww.exe ?
That's another one that I see in my download history.

It irks me that I did not keep track of which one worked.

I was working on 12 laptops at the time, so I'm starting to mix them up in my recollections.
And now that I think about it, I'm not sure that I did solve this display problem.
I think that I had to leave it running a generic display.
All those laptops are now in DR Congo, and out of my reach to confirm their status.
Sorry, that I can't be more helpful.
