PLEASE SOMEONE HELP Thinkpad 760E

I was updating with windows and for some reason my computer shut down and restarted by itself, but once it came back up, it says Explorer has caused in error in BROWSEUI.DLL, I can't get around this to do anything, My start button won't work so I can not get into the registry to fix it, anyone have any suggestions?????

I have tried doing the floppy drive with Windows ME set up disk and it only came up once that I had new hardware couldn't find hardware and never came up again.

This kind of thing happens with all comptuers at one point or another. I think it's time to reinstall Windows.

I can't do anything, it won't work my floppy to reboot, and I already know 760E doesn't boot from CD Rom, I am kinda stuck, and all my windows are on CD, I even tried direct connection through infared from another laptop, not even knowing what the heck to do

I really don't want to take it back to the shop I just got it out {crying}
Alpha I read alot of ur posts, and u seem to be a wizard what would u do?
I can't even go to DOS, or maybe I don't know how?????

First, I'd make sure all the important data is backed up. You can do tht with a DOS boot disk and an old copy of LapLink (look around on Google.)

After that, you can get a DOS book disk (www.bootdisk.com , you can download an image file) and erase your hard drive and then copy the dos system files and cd driver to the hard drive then have your computer boot dos with cd drivers off the hard drive and not need the floppy.

I also think Hitachi Diskmanager has a few features to help install Windows on computers that can't boot CD. (ftp://www.thinkpads.com/pub/pub/DMDISK.EXE)

ok I went to bootdisk.com and they asked me to install a floppy, I can't use the floppy drive on the 760E, it is a PCMCIA and it isnot taking it, for some reason, I can put it on a CD ROM? because my CD ROM(internal) lights up when I start the computer, it is a 4x, I didn't think it would be able to read CD-R or CD-RW, I don't know even what DOS driver to use {pouting}

Completely lost here

PCMCIA floppy? Try going into the BIOS (hold F1 down as you power up the computer and keep it held untill you get the Easy Setup screen) and going into the startup configuration. Add the PCMCIA to the startup list. See if that allows you to boot from floppy.

ok I set it to boot up PCMCIA, Floppy, HDD
It booted up and said THINKPAD really big and then went to Windows ME, I have the DOS boot disk in the floppy, it didn't do anything?

i think I am going to have to look around for an IBM floppy drive do u suggest internal or plug? I found a cheap 760E external floppy that plugs to the back of the Thinkpad, on ebay. I think I am going to have to do that because it isn't seeing my PCMCIA Floppy at all.

I suggest buying an external one so you can use your CD drive and floppy drive at the same time if needed. One example of that situation is installing Windows.

what kind of memory can be added, to the 760E?
I have 16 built in, an 8MB and a 16MB, in there now, however I found two 64MB in my closet that fit it, but I have read somewhere that 64MB sticks will not be read, and i don't want to take the chance of frying the computer by installing them,So what is the best advice to get the max memory that I can get out of the 760E any suggestions?
Memory type, 144pin? or specifications need?

64mb sticks won't fry your computer, they just won't be fully read. If you have a 760XL or XD, there's no OFFICIAL support but not in the E's. If the sticks are EDO, however, then the worst that can happen is having your computer only read half. If they are not EDO, then they'l do the same thing any non-EDO stick will do in a 760, just not be detected.

ok so I put one of the sticks in and started the computer, and an error 201 came up and I checked the memory and it beeped 2 times. So I should invest in 32MBs HUH? Do u think it is possible to run windows XP on these things? I think I might be pushing it on that one huh

XP will run on a 760XL or XD with 64 or more megs of RAM. XP's minimum requirements are a P166MMX and 64mb RAM.
