The story behind this machine:
I've recently picked up a bunch of older ThinkPads that sat unused for a few years. One of them was a 15" T42p with a cracked screen and damaged palmrest but it sported a very rare fingerprint reader option.
Since I already own a maxed-out T43p I started toying with the idea of configuring a quiet-yet-powerful-enough T42p that would be somewhat of an anti-thesis to my own T43pSF. I'd dare say that I was pretty successful in accomplishing this task...
The only real problem here is that I have no use for this system right now, but am certain that someone around here would enjoy it.
known imperfections:
- normal wear and tear for a ThinkPad from this era
- one stuck (blue/green) pixel in the middle of an otherwise nice FlexView LCD
- the fan is audible - not really noisy - at startup.
the good stuff:
- I just ordered a NOS palmrest with FPR for this system, and will pick out a nice NMB keyboard for it.
- The screen is clear and bright with no dust specs, pressure marks or scratches
- Late model, revised "red dot" motherboard that shows absolutely no signs of any known ailments
- Overall, the machine runs cool and quiet and should be able to competently serve as an inexpensive desktop replacement or backup unit.
