T43 disk FRU

#1 Post by miskox » Sat Mar 07, 2015 4:27 pm

Hi all!

I have read many of the posts but there are still plenty of them to read so I hope this has not been answered before.

I have a working 15" T43 (I use it for WWW, some batch programming etc.). I have XP PRO 32 bit, 2GB RAM.

I want to buy another HDD (because I don't know how to install SSD) - just to have one NEW old stock disk when this one fails.

The problem/question I have is: here is the photo of my disk (warning 2+MB picture):
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/misko ... orking.jpg

As you can see there is a LENOVO P/N on the disk:

Code: Select all

42T1019
And there you can see another sticker with:

Code: Select all

ASM P/N 42T1444
FRU P/N 39T2525
If I search for these codes (42T1019, 42T1444, 39T2525) I get some hits for HDDs.

Why are there hits for 42T1019 for 60GB and/or 80GB drive? Shouldn't there only be only one version of the disk for each code (similar to UPC/EAN codes)?

I read here on the forum that T43 is very specific regarding the disk it has installed (to avoid error 2010).

Also I would like to allign the disk when I get the new disk. Currently I have this:

Code: Select all

Disk: 0 Partition: 0 StartingOffset: 31,5 KB
So the question is: which part number should I buy? I would say 42T1019.

Another question: is Windows XP PRO 32 bit supported on SSD if I manage to install it (I will try to stick to XP because it offers me everything I need/want)?

Thank you.
Saso

If you use an SSD, XP does not include native TRIM support, which is important for maintaining performance, but you can still manually TRIM the drive using disk utilites that are usually available from the drive manufacturers. This is still important even though some SSDs perform these operations by themselves.

It doesn't really matter, as long as the drive has an IBM FRU# it should work OK in a T43. Here is a partial list of drives that do not have an IBM FRU# that have been reported to work in T43/R52:

Drives that work out of the box:
Seagate ST9120821A (120GB 5400RPM)
Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST980825A (80GB 7200RPM) on T43 with BIOS 1.23
Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST910021A (100GB 7200RPM) (one user reports success, another reports failure).
Seagate Momentus 5400.3 ST9160821A (160GB 5400RPM) with firmware 3.ALE on T43 and R52 with BIOS 1.29 and EC 1.06. The infamous 2010-error comes up during bootup, but the drive works fine.
Fujitsu MHV2040AH (040GB 5400RPM) this is the default disk for T43s
Fujitsu MHV2060AH (060GB 5400RPM)
Fujitsu MHV2100AH (100GB 5400RPM) on T43 with BIOS 1.23
Fujitsu MHV2120AH (120GB 5400RPM) on T43 with BIOS 1.27 and R52 with BIOS 1.29

There are also several drives that can have their firmware modified to work on a T43. And you can install an unofficial modified BIOS which removes '2010 ERROR' from POST when the machine boot-up with non-approved HDD - an HDD without proper IBM/Lenovo firmware. This modified BIOS is identical to the official IBM/Lenovo BIOS but the '2010' error message, 2x beep and delay is removed out.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

In my experience it really doesn't matter. Try getting the newest drive that you can find and enjoy. Anything with a FRU number - unless found as new old stock - is likely to be very old.

I have yet to see a T43/p - and I've owned hundreds of them - that refuses to boot with a non-approved drive, presuming BIOS 1.25 or later.

Happy shopping.

If you install the modded BIOS from this link, you can put in ANY PATA/IDE hard disk.
Errors 1802 (wifi) and 2010 (hard disk) will be gone.
