takes almost 3 minutes to shutdown....

#1 Post by GoEatFood » Sat May 28, 2005 10:19 pm

when ever I shut down my system it takes about 3 minutes. which seems very odd...start almost as fast as my desktop...but, shutting down is where it really hurts...is this normal? also, this one is prob easy to answer but, if I end up sending this back for a replacement...the left side of the keyboard seems lose. I've tryed taking out the screws and replacing them yet it did nothing. but, if I do send it back do they have to redo the whole order or what's that process and how long does it take?

thanks for any info.

Just a quick question, did you fresh install windows XP and wipe the RR partition?

My cousin bought a thinkpad and I essentially wiped his drive and did a fresh install of XP Pro. Said it made a WORLD of difference in boot and shutdown times.

I would make backup images of the RR partition and your current XP install just to be safe.

did you perhaps turn on some option that deletes your page files at shut down (sometimes done for security or performace reasons). Also get the latest drivers/Bios from IBM. try killing some processes before shutting down windows that way you can pinpoint if some process is giving windows a hard time at shutdown. If all fails.....do what rev_one said.

I ran into this problem after running Windows Update once. I found that one of their updates caused this problem. After uninstalling the update my shutdown times returned to normal. If I reinstalled the update, the long shutdown times came back. If you run into this problem after running Windows Update, check on http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/ under Windows Update and search for long shutdown times. Perhaps someone else is having the same issue.

The problem stems from the Hive (registry) not unloading like it should. You can read system errors in userenv.log, and you can look in Event Viewer for errors at: Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.

Below is the actual link for Windows Update Newgroup.
