CPU Upgrade For Lenovo R61I

#1 Post by txnative3 » Sat Mar 14, 2015 6:24 pm

I have a Lenovo R61I 7732CTOL3Z7838 it has a CPU T5750 Bios version 2.21(71ETC1WW) date 2008-07-01 system boardserial#VF1YG88D004...have a Dell Vostro1320 with a Intel Core2 Duo CPU T9550 CPU ID 1067A Boardname 0T052J Vendor Dell Inc.(Dell Computer,www.dell.com.My question is any reason that I can't put the T9550 (2.66ghz)into the Lenovo & put the T5750 back into the dell ,basically just switch between the two laptops..the Dell is at Bios (A09) most current....use linux on my computers & would I need to update the bios on the Lenovo or do the "Middleton Bios " upgrade .When browsing through Lenovo it seems like this could work ....just don't want to brick either laptop & am currently using 64 bit os on both machines.Would appreciate any feedback ....both laptops are working fine .....planning on getting rid of the dell as I have a T43 & S10 Ideapad also.....like my Ibm & Lenovo products.

To be specific, the R61i uses the Intel 965 mobile chipset, which supports an FSB speed of up to 800MHz.

The T9550 requires an FSB of 1066MHz.

The R61i will not even boot (powers up but no display) when the T9550 is installed.

The Vostro 1320 uses the newer Intel GM45 chipset, which supports 1066MHz FSB.

Maybe pin-mod as the one for T61 will do the trick: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=110620

That's a hardware modification that requires:

1. high-level electronics skills to do the pinmod itself
2. changing the SPD timings on the RAM sticks
3. and possibly flash a modified BIOS.
