thinkpad 600 266mmx unsolder onboard 32mb?

#1 Post by thinkpadcollection » Tue Mar 17, 2015 4:40 pm

Wondering if this can do this done this way by removing onboard 32mb memory so there is less complicated set up and less power usage this way?

I did search and there is many threads on undoing this via CMOS setting editor but these were for 600E and 600X, hardly little info on 600?

Cheers, Jason

I'm assuming that you want to disconnect the onboard 32MB of RAM because it is defective, yes? In which case, if you apply the hex edit to disable the base memory, I believe it will still be taking up some power (it logically disconnects the memory from the system, not physically). The power requirements of a 32MB PC66 SDRAM SODIMM was around 500mA (peak) when operating and about 150mA when idling (not in standby mode). This translates to about 1.65W operating and 0.5W idling. Assuming that a 35Wh battery will drive a 600 system for 2 hours, then I think the internal memory is worth about 4 or 5 minutes additional run time, if you're running the system 50% of the time (active vs. inactive).

Given that you will have to unsolder the RAM from the board, I don't know if it's worth it for the few minutes of run time. You could do some damage and then the system might be unbootable.
