Mysterious System Protect User cannot be deleted.

#1 Post by goodgenie4u » Wed Mar 18, 2015 2:20 am

I bought on ebay, a used (off commercial lease) X220 six months ago. The operating system according to the vendor, Win 7 was freshly installed. The one nagging thing when I check windows Explorer is what appears a system protected user named Burl. When I try to delete it different ways, it just does not. Every time any tag for my computer shows, it is the Burl user that is referenced. Mind you the only other user is me shown as the administrator. I thought it would allow me to delete "Burl" as a user; no such luck.

What can I do to fix this?

Thanks
Dennis

Disclaimer... edit the registry at your own risk! Make a backup of all data you prepare to delete or change.

Log in as administrator (if necessary, in safe mode), then create a new administrator privileged account.

Open regedit. Navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\ProfileList and find the key that lists the user you are interested in removing, and delete the entire key, noting the last few digits of the GUID. Go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\ProfileGUID and delete the key with that GUID. Then go to C:\users\ and delete the folder for that user. Reboot.
