T43 1871-4BU BIOS 2010 Error Fix

#1 Post by CeeBee » Sun Mar 22, 2015 4:24 am

My IBM 100GB Fujitsu HD started to show errors, so, time for a new drive. And, as I had an Hitachi 120GB (HTS541212H9AT00) sitting around, also time for the 2010 fix. Here is what I did:

I burned a boot CD from this ISO image: T43_R52-70ET69WW_SLIC2.1_no_1802_no_2010.iso. Then I booted and the flash stared okay, only to stop/freeze and end with a red error screen "Restart System with Crisis Diskette". To me it looked as if the flash didn't happened, although, later I learned that this is what typically happens ( http://thinkwiki.de/2010_Error_umgehen ) and that the flash probably was okay.

To be sure I had a 2010 fix, I flashed my T43 again, with this WinPhlash package: R52-T43-76UJ29US_SLIC2.1_M09_no_1802_no_2010_by_TTAV134. This time everything went fine and the flash concluded with a reboot.

I installed the Hitachi and cloned my old Fujitsu HD and booted and no 2010 error. So far, so good. And the new HD seems faster, cooler and better all across.

Questions: a) Presumably I now have the latter (2nd) flash, which should have overwritten the 1st flash. Right? b) Is there a way to check that I now have a modded BIOS? c) What the difference between the 1st and 2nd flash, if any?

Finally, if I want to flash the original IBM 70ET69WW 1.29 BIOS, do I have to first flash to 1.28 and then flash the 1.29? Or, what's the procedure?

Thanks.

... if I want to flash the original IBM 70ET69WW 1.29 BIOS, do I have to first flash to 1.28 and then flash the 1.29?

In the meantime, I'm back at the original IBM BIOS by way of flashing (down leveling) 70uj28us.exe to BIOS version 1.28 and then 70uj29us.exe back up to version 1.29. Going straight back to 1.29 didn't work (as expected) as the 'flasher' detected 1.29 and thought no flash required.

Error 2010 is back, but, I'll live with it for a while until I know which mod is the way to go (see original query above). Error 2010 is an old story, and plenty of people have modded their T43s, so, I hope I'll get some feedback. TIA.

... not that I've ever had to mess with this fix, but just for the information of other readers of this thread: There is an exensive thread on this forum about how to remove the 2010-error; see T43 no more error 2010 (picture warning) also containing links to various downloads.

Johan, thanks .. I (re)visited that thread after my original posting, but, imo, it doesn't quite answer my query on what mod is the better (if there is such a thing) and/or if there are differences between the ISO boot version and the WinPhlash version. I'll go back and reread the comments to see if I'll get smarter. Anyhow, it's good to know that I can revert to the original BIOS in case of need (-> 1.28 -> 1.29). Thanks. 8)

Always apply TTAV134's modded BIOS.
Even if it would throw an error at the end of the flash, ignore it and just reboot.
Been there, done that (well over 50 times on all different machines).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

That's what I have tried so far, but, afaik, there are two mods by TTAV134, an ISO image and a WinPhlash package:

ISO image: T43_R52-70ET69WW_SLIC2.1_no_1802_no_2010.iso
WinPhlash package: R52-T43-76UJ29US_SLIC2.1_M09_no_1802_no_2010_by_TTAV134.zip

In my case, the former stops/freezes with an error message (see my 1st posting) and the latter works just fine. What's the difference between the ISO and the WinPlash, if any? And, which one is the one to use? Same end result, I gather, but, in case there is a 'better' one, I'll like to know.

Also, in case there are settings in the original (pre-mod) BIOS I should check/change before applying the mod, let me know too. Thanks.

I meant the Winphlash one with the name TTAV in it.
Whenever I do this update, I insert a HD (I have both SATA and PATA) with XP/SP3 and that Winphlash program.
Been using the same HDs forever and a day.
No setting changes required.

Okay, thanks. That is also the one I used. After the flash the T43 rebooted as expected (no errors). After a cold start I went into the BIOS and reset one setting (which I had changed before the flash) and saved with F10. Just to be sure the new BIOS had all the settings reconfirmed/set. :? Seems to work just fine...

Thanks.
