Bluetooth with no OBEX synchronization and folder access

#1 Post by Sternenschwaermer » Mon May 30, 2005 7:51 am

Dear colleagues!

My Thinkpad, a T41P (I'm rather happy with it, except of the creaking when my hands are placed above the recesses to keep the closed notebook closed), supports bluetooth without separately needing hardware.
Like some others :)

But after installing my bluetooth mobile phone (Sony-Ericsson V800 UMTS), I don't get the same access like to other mobile phones at my PC, with a bluetooth dongle.
That bluetooth dongle supports the full OBEX features, like OBEX sychronization, OBEX object push, OBEX sending and so on. And I cannot access to the mobile phone folders with media, pictures etc.
With the bluetooth II software from IBM (newest version), I can only push or send pictures or MP3s/Midis to my mobile phone from my Thinkpad, and vice versa.
Access to my mobile folders is only possible when tools from Sony Ericsson are installed, and then I must use an USB conbnection cable, no bluetooth access :(

Apparently, there are different version of bluetooth software on the market, some with more capabilities and comfort, some with less features. Seems as if the "mercedes" or "rolls-royce" of the notebooks saved money when licensing the bluetooth software.
Not very nice.

Is there a chance to deinstall the IBM Bluetooth tools, and install another which is compatible to IBM (I've got access to an MSI bluetooth dongle, and another one of Typhoon)'?
Maybe I've only to substitute some entries in a setup.inf so that it appears from IBM?

Regards...

The answer is yes. You can uninstall the bluetooth drivers. You can also install the microsoft bluetooth drivers. I switched over to the Microsoft drivers because of the Microsoft Bluetooth mouse that I use from time to time. All of my bluetooth devices work fine with the new bluetooth stack. Your built in bluetooth will work fine with the microsoft stack and you won't need the dongle. I keep mine for other computers that I want to talk with that don't have bluetooth.

Hi...

Are the Microsoft drivers as good as other drivers with Widcom under the surface?
Do they support OBEX folder access/synchronizazion/push and those things?

Can I install other drivers, too?

IMHO - not as good as widcomm - the stack is optimized for PC to PC communication - but it has it's pros. You should also upgrade to the latest access connections applet so that bluetooth will come on automatically at boot. If you search this forum on widcomm you will find thread dealing with upgrading widcomm so that it can use the HID and headset profile which the microsoft drivers excel at. This would be the best of both worlds. I haven't taken the plunge yet to do this - but i think it's the better route to go.
