Device Detect/Undetect Alarm on Screen Close
Device Detect/Undetect Alarm on Screen Close
Just today, when closing and opening the lid I get the windows alarm for detecting/undetecting. that is, the sound you usually hear when you plug in/plug out a USB device (or some other non-USB devices)
Note: Its got nothing to do with suspend-standby (which is what I usually have the computer to do when the lid closes). This I know because: #1. If I send computer into suspend-standby with keystrokes it doesnt do the sound, coming in and out. #2. If I change the power option to do 'nothing' when I close the lid (so no suspend-standby) then it still does the alarm. The issue seems to be with the monitor and/or its driver.
Clearly its treating the screen as a device that comes on and off. This noise is very annoying, please help!
Just yesterday I updated all my drivers, BIOS and IBM software---using the new softward update program. So I suspect this has to do with this.
Any ideas? Many thanks in advance!

...more clues
I've been investingating. Two relevant pieces of information:
- apparently when I close and then open the screen lid (note: no hibernation/suspend set up) I find that the 'Intel Extreme Graphics 2 for mobile' is showing me that the setting has switched automatically to "Intel(R) Dual Display Clone >> monitor+notebook" mode from the original just "notebook" mode.
I have no idea why it is doing this. In my opinion this driver must be screwed up. - in control-panel_system_harware_device_manager, I find that I have 2 identical entries under Display Adapters (Inter(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller). I also have double-twin entries under monitors: I have 2 "Default monitor"s and 2 "IBM ThinkPad 1024x768 TFT LCD panel"s.
Is this duplicate entry thing normal?

back to Old driver
I seem to have solved the problem. The problem seems to have been the new Intel Monitor driver.
This is what I did:
I switched back to the previous driver (using Sofware Installer program), that is I switched from 6.14.10.3733 to 6.14.10.3732. This required actually uninstalling 6.14.10.3733, then with the computer on the windows drivers installing 6.14.10.3732. At that point the Sofware Installer tells you have to do it "manually", its not really manually but its a stand-alone installer.
Finally, I had to reboot (this did not go so well since it asked me to reboot twice, I agreed, but then the reboot would not come). I had to use task manager to close the insaller wizard and reboot manually.
So it wasn't without glitches, but I seem to have a silent monitor now!
Has anyone else had this problem?

ivan,
I am experiencing exactly what you were with my newly-received X41.
From the factory, I also have 2 copies of the (seemingly) identical video driver for the Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family version 6.14.10.3984 dated 12/13/04.
On the Lenovo web site, the latest driver is 6.14.10.4317 dated 6/15/05.
I uninstalled both copies of the old driver, rebooted, and installed the new drive, ansd rebooted again.
Unlike you, a very unsatisfactory result: the old (!) drivers remain, and the problem remains as well.
Anyone else having a problem with this? I am getting tired of this beeping every time I open and close the lid!

I have the same problem with a new X41.
I tried various versions of the video driver, including the latest from the Intel website, with no success.
I eventually had to de-install the "Power Manager Driver" to stop it detecting lid closures. All the other power functions seem to work fine, so I I'm not sure what functionality I'm missing. The driver never installed properly anyway - taking an age to finish, and ending up as an incomplete installation according to my fancy 3rd party uninstaller.
I tried both versions of the PM driver (X41 and 'general') on the IBovo website.

Stan, I just deleted the Power Manger Driver (but NOT the Power Manager), and the problem has gone away. Power Manager still seems to work fine.Weymouth_Stan wrote:I have the same problem with a new X41.

Does anyone know what Power Manager Driver does?
I will probably end up reinstalling everything when I have time (ha!). My call to IBM today was pretty useless. The guy had me run hardware diagnostics (not a bad idea) but was of no help (reinstall windows, no repair install possible) after that.
