Laptop is in excellent condition except the fault GPU. Should I part it out to buy a replacement, or should I try to obtain a functional replacement mobo?

I honestly wouldn't bother with either. Unless you are creating a flexview frankenpad, its not really worth it IMO. I would spend the money to get a T420 or FHD T520/W520. They are much faster and the FHD displays in the 15.6" models are much higher quality than the WUXGA T61 panels, even though you lose some vertical pixels.
Current Thinkpads: W530 (functional classic keyboard mod), X301, T61, T60, T43, T23, 600X, 770
Other: mk5 Toughbook cf-19, mk1 Toughbook cf-53
