Random shutdowns X201
Random shutdowns X201
This was posted originally by me under Burn in failures. The burn in shutdown failures were due to overtemp situations solved by cleaning fan and new thermal paste.
However I am still getting random shutdowns on this X201 when the cpu temps are in the 50-60C range.
It started happening very rarely about once a week and then it happened 5 times in one day. It has now been fine for a couple of days.
I verified it is not the OS as it has happened once with Ubuntu and about 4 times with W7. I think it has happened on both battery and AC power but need to track this more accurately.
The W7 event view says "system rebooted (I manually restarted) without cleanly shutting down first".
I have run Passmark Burn and Heavy Load burn in for over 24 hours without any shutdowns. Temperatures never exceeded 92C.
Seems power related, like a loose connection. However, I am pretty sure the machine did this when I got it before I opened up and replaced thermal paste.
BTW it does have display (entire lid) from a X200s.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot? The only thing I know to do at this point is to replace the system board.
Update: I have since ordered a system board and will see what happens.
Thanks,
Bruce

OK, it has not shutdown for 3 days. Before I change the system board there must be ideas out there of what is going on with this machine.

Re: Random shutdowns X201
Before going that far, what happens if you remove the wifi card and run it from ethernet for a while?
Remove your Turbo-mem if there is any.

Re: Random shutdowns X201
This X201 motherboard has another problem and that is a corrupted EEPROM on the ethernet controller, another reason to replace the motherboard.

However, I could pull the wireless card and leave the machine running and see if it shuts down. I could also change out the wireless card with another. I have an Intel 6300 but I think it might need a modded BIOS.
thanks for the thoughts...

Re: Random shutdowns X201
OK, I modded the BIOS and put a N-6200 wireless card in. I plan to let it sit powered on until the machine turns itself off or not.
